US Government Affirms Belief That Missing Journalist Austin Tice is Alive in Syria
US President Joe Biden announced that the US government believes journalist Austin Tice, missing for 12 years near Damascus, is alive. The US remains committed to his return following Bashar Assad's removal from power. "We think we can get him back," Biden stated at the White House, though he admitted there is "no direct evidence" of Tice's current status. He emphasised Assad should be held accountable.

Efforts to locate Tice continue, as officials work to pinpoint his whereabouts since his disappearance in August 2012 at a checkpoint west of Damascus. Biden reiterated the commitment to reuniting Tice with his family. Tice, originally from Houston, has had his work featured in The Washington Post and McClatchy newspapers. A video released weeks after he vanished showed him blindfolded and surrounded by armed men, uttering "Oh, Jesus." Since then, there has been no further communication from him.
Family's Hope and Advocacy
Tice's mother, Debra, shared at a recent news conference in Washington that the family received information from a "significant source" confirming her son is alive. She did not disclose the source but stated, "He is being cared for and he is well — we do know that." The Tice family recently met with State Department and White House officials to discuss ongoing efforts.
Syria has publicly denied holding Tice. Despite this, the US continues to operate under the assumption that he is alive. A US official, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorisation to comment publicly, confirmed ongoing efforts to locate Tice and facilitate his return home.
Community Support and Continued Efforts
Debra Tice urged those in Syria to remind people that Austin's family awaits his return. Her comments were amplified by hostage advocacy groups on social media. She expressed concern about Austin's condition upon release, stating he would need significant care and direction. She pleaded for anyone who encounters him to guide him back to his family.
The situation remains delicate as the US government navigates diplomatic channels and intelligence efforts to secure Tice's safe return. The family's hope persists despite the challenges faced over the years since Austin's disappearance.
