US Air Force’s ‘Swiss Army Knives’ Lead High-Risk Search And Rescue Mission For Missing Pilot In Iran

The United States has stepped up efforts to locate a missing fighter jet crew member in Iran, with elite combat search and rescue teams now leading the operation in what officials describe as a highly dangerous mission. As the search intensifies, specialist US Air Force units are reportedly combing the area using Blackhawk helicopters and preparing for possible ground recovery if the terrain proves too difficult to access by air.

Elite rescue teams deployed in high-risk mission

According to a former US Air Force Pararescue Jumpers commander, specialist American combat search and rescue personnel are currently involved in the effort to recover the missing pilot. Speaking to CBS News, the former commander said these elite units are operating in one of the most demanding military rescue environments, where every minute can be critical.

The teams are using Blackhawk helicopters to search the area where the crew member is believed to be missing, as the US continues its efforts to locate and safely extract the pilot.

Parachute insertion possible if helicopters cannot reach target

The former commander explained that if the rescue target is located in terrain that helicopters cannot safely access, pararescuers may be inserted by air in a more direct and risky manner.

He said that in such a situation, pararescuers will jump from a plane and continue the mission on foot. This allows rescue teams to reach locations that may be cut off by rough terrain, hostile conditions or other operational barriers.

What pararescue jumpers do once on the ground

Once deployed on the ground, the pararescue jumpers focus on quickly making contact with the missing crew member. Their responsibilities can include providing emergency medical treatment if required, protecting the survivor from enemy threats, and moving them towards a safer extraction point.

The former commander said the teams are trained to contact the missing airman, render medical aid if necessary, evade or hold off the enemy and reach a location where they can eventually be rescued.

Describing the role of these personnel, the former commander underlined just how demanding the job is. Calling their jobs "harrowing and massively dangerous" is an understatement, he said, highlighting the extreme risks involved in such rescue operations behind or near hostile lines.

He added that these pararescuers are known as "the Swiss Army knives of the US Air Force" because of their ability to perform multiple critical roles in combat zones, from medical response and survival support to tactical defence and extraction planning.
