UNRWA Highlights Severe Consequences If Israel Closes East Jerusalem Headquarters for Palestinians

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, warns of severe consequences if Israel proceeds with its plan to shut down its east Jerusalem headquarters. The closure, set for Thursday, would significantly impact tens of thousands of Palestinians who rely on the agency's services. UNRWA operates 12 facilities in east Jerusalem, providing essential services such as education and healthcare.

UNRWA Warns of Impact from Israels Closure

Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for UNRWA, highlighted the potential disruption to daily life. "That's the thing, it has an impact on people's lives," she stated regarding the possible closure. In the Shuafat refugee camp, residents currently have easy access to a quality clinic. However, if closed, they would face challenges like crossing a difficult checkpoint and paying for transportation and medical expenses.

Impact on Education and Healthcare

The closure of UNRWA schools would exacerbate existing issues in east Jerusalem's Palestinian areas. These regions already suffer from a shortage of classrooms, making it difficult to accommodate all students. At least 1,200 children are currently enrolled in these schools, which play a crucial role in their education.

UNRWA's healthcare facilities serve over 70,000 people in east Jerusalem. If these clinics are shut down, many Palestinians will struggle to access necessary medical services. Even those eligible for Israeli primary healthcare would face additional costs for transportation and medication.

Uncertainty Surrounding Israeli Order

Touma expressed uncertainty about the specifics of the Israeli order. It remains unclear whether the closure would affect only east Jerusalem or extend to all Palestinian territories. This ambiguity adds to the anxiety faced by those dependent on UNRWA's services.

Israel accuses UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas, a claim that the United Nations denies. Despite these allegations, the potential closure poses immediate challenges for Palestinians relying on UNRWA's support.

"We're talking about the poorest of the poor," Touma emphasized. "Right now, they have no alternative." The lack of options underscores the critical role UNRWA plays in supporting vulnerable communities in east Jerusalem.
