United States Imposes 104% Tariffs On China, Effective Today
In a bold move by the United States, the White House has officially announced the implementation of 104 % tariffs on Chinese imports, set to take effect on April 9. This decision was relayed by a Fox Business reporter, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing trade tensions between the two economic giants. This comes after President Donald Trump's ultimatum to China, demanding the withdrawal of its 34 % duty on US goods within a single day, underlining the administration's aggressive stance on trade policies.
Reacting to the US's initial imposition of a 34 % tariff, the Chinese government retaliated with an equivalent tariff on American products, scheduled to start on April 10. The tit-for-tat exchange underscores the deepening rift between the US and China, with both nations standing firm on their trade positions. China's Commerce Ministry criticized the US's actions as an escalation of economic pressure, vowing to take necessary countermeasures to safeguard its national interests.

Adding another layer to the trade dispute, China's Finance Ministry unveiled new export controls on a collection of medium and heavy rare-earth elements, crucial in various high-tech applications. These include elements like samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium, with the restrictions becoming effective from April 4. This move is seen as a strategic leverage point, given the critical role these elements play in the global supply chain, particularly for the United States.
The culmination of the US's tariff strategy was initially hinted at by President Trump earlier in the week. He declared that China would be subjected to an additional 50 per cent tariff atop the previously announced 34 per cent, unless it retracted its reciprocal tariffs on US imports within the given timeframe. The confirmation from the White House puts into motion the combined tariffs, signaling a new phase in the trade standoff between the two nations.
