United States Firmly Rejects BJP's Claims Of Anti Modi Agenda

The United States has firmly rejected claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 7, 2024. The BJP alleged that targeted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Gautam Adani were orchestrated by the U.S. State Department. These accusations followed investigative reports by the OCCRP, which scrutinised Modi, Adani, and their connections to controversial issues.

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi responded to these allegations by reiterating its commitment to media freedom worldwide. It denied any involvement in influencing the editorial decisions of media organisations. This statement was intended to clarify the U.S.'s stance amidst rising tensions between India and the United States.

India-U.S. Relations Strained

Relations between India and the U.S. have been under strain due to several incidents. Notably, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission indicted Adani and his associates for alleged financial misconduct under U.S. law. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has chosen not to comment on this matter and has previously distanced itself from the Adani indictment.

The BJP's accusations have further complicated diplomatic ties between the two nations. The party cited a report by French media agency Mediaparte, alleging that USAID significantly influences OCCRP's reporting. They accused OCCRP of being part of a "Deep State" agenda targeting Modi to destabilise India.

U.S. Embassy's Clarification

In response, the U.S. Embassy clarified its position, stating that while it collaborates with independent organisations to support journalism, it does not dictate their editorial content. This clarification aimed to dispel any misconceptions about U.S.'s role in international media narratives.

The BJP also suggested a political conspiracy involving various U.S. government entities, linking Congress Party interactions with OCCRP reports as part of this alleged scheme. This exchange comes at a time when the BJP appears to be positioning itself against the outgoing Biden administration.

BJP's Political Strategy

The BJP might be anticipating a more favourable relationship with the incoming Trump administration, given president-elect Donald Trump's nominees' history of criticising the American "Deep State." The direct mention of U.S. government agencies by the BJP marks an unprecedented escalation in rhetoric between India and the United States.

This situation highlights ongoing complexities in international relations as both countries navigate sensitive political landscapes. As events unfold, observers will be keenly watching how these dynamics impact future diplomatic engagements between India and the United States.
