UAE Pioneers in Tackling Climate Impact on Water Security at COP28 Symposium
In the face of escalating climate issues, UAEU and Trends Research Advisory convened a critical seminar at COP28, focusing on the challenges and prospects of water security in the UAE. This collaboration brought together experts and academic research to propose practical solutions, with a joint report highlighting the interconnectivity of water with broader environmental issues. The event underscored the UAE's strategic initiatives, such as leveraging renewable energy and treated wastewater, to combat the adverse effects of climate change on water resources.
In a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of water security amid the backdrop of climate change, the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) recently organized a seminal event in collaboration with Trends Research Advisory. The seminar, which took place at the influential COP28 held in Expo Dubai, was aptly titled "Water Security under Climate Change Conditions in the UAE: Challenges and Opportunities." This forum facilitated crucial discussions on the multifaceted challenges posed by climate alterations and their impact on water resources within the UAE.
Commendation of the Collaborative Effort
Dr. Muhammad Al-Ali, the CEO of Trends Research Advisory, praised the joint effort with UAEU, underscoring the significance of merging scientific research with practical applications to enhance community welfare and provide solutions to global predicaments. In his commendation, Dr. Al-Ali underlined the necessity of a methodical scientific approach in disseminating information and confronting the difficulties encountered by varying populations worldwide.
Dr. Al-Ali drew attention to the synergy between the two organizations, which was evidenced by the publication of a joint report on water security and the concurrent symposium at COP28. Such collaborations, he insists, are instrumental in addressing pertinent issues and establishing a sustainable trajectory for future generations.

Connecting Water Security with Broader Environmental Issues
Within the framework of COP28's agenda, the report's examination of water security was a focal point. Dr. Al-Ali linked this to the broader concerns of food security and the development of sustainable food systems, urging a consolidated response from all entities involved, notably research and academic bodies. His optimism about the ongoing partnership between Trends Research Advisory and UAEU was palpable, as he envisioned it playing a pivotal role in surmounting challenges related to water security.
Prof. Ahmed Murad, Associate Provost for Research at UAEU, stressed the strategic nature of the partnership with TRENDS Research Advisory. He pointed out that this alliance not only bolsters research excellence but also brings the global challenge of water security into sharp focus, necessitating scientific interventions.
Tackling Climate Change's Impact on Water Resources
Prof. Murad painted a picture of the UAE's visionary approach to water security in light of climate change. The study he referenced delves into the complex repercussions of climate fluctuations on water availability, foreseeing temperature rises that could lead to higher evaporation rates and plant transpiration. It also forewarns of altered precipitation patterns, which may result in harsher droughts and unpredictable rainstorms, negatively influencing groundwater replenishment. The study also cautions against potential shoreline shifts and groundwater salinization due to rising sea levels.
Underscoring the UAE's proactive stance, Prof. Murad pointed to the expansion of non-traditional water sources as a pivotal strategy to bridge the demand-supply gap. He elaborated on the country's innovative exploitation of renewable energy and efficient use of treated wastewater, which are vital in mitigating the future impacts of climate change on water resources and maintaining an ecological equilibrium.
The seminar wrapped up with a panel discussion featuring distinguished experts including Dr. Dalal Al Shamsi, Dr. Serhat Çobükçoglu, Dr. Mohsen Sharif, Dr. Abdulazim Ibrahim, and Dr. Ahmed Saif Al-Nasr. The discussions underscored the gravity of the water security challenge and the urgency of finding sustainable solutions.
In conclusion, the seminar on water security at COP28, spearheaded by UAEU in partnership with Trends Research Advisory, reflects the UAE's commitment to pioneering research and innovative solutions in the face of climate change. By fostering such collaborative efforts, the UAE continues to lead the way in addressing environmental challenges, ensuring the well-being of its population and setting an example for the global community.
