UNGA79: World Leaders Rally Behind India's Bid For Permanent Security Council Seat!
At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79), India's candidacy for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council gained strong momentum, with leaders from across the world rallying in support. The assembly witnessed a growing consensus among nations for the need to reform the Security Council, expanding its permanent membership to reflect the modern geopolitical landscape.
Key world leaders from major countries such as the United States, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom endorsed India's bid for a permanent seat, recognizing the country's increasing global influence and its role as a major player in international affairs.

In a statement shared by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, multiple leaders were seen endorsing India's candidacy, highlighting its importance in the global arena. The video posted on X (formerly Twitter) captioned "A buzzword at #UNGA79," showcased support from nations worldwide.
Angola's President Joao Lourenco stressed that reforming the Security Council is an "urgent and pressing" need to better represent the countries of the Global South, which includes Africa, Latin America, and the Indian subcontinent. He emphasized the importance of giving these regions a stronger voice in global decision-making processes.
Chile's President Gabriel Boric suggested that a clear timeline should be set for these reforms, stating that by the UN's 80th anniversary, the Security Council should include permanent seats for Brazil, India, and at least one African nation. This call for setting a concrete deadline underlines the urgency that many nations feel regarding the need for structural changes in the Council.
France's President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his country's long-standing support for an expanded Security Council that includes permanent membership for India, along with Germany, Japan, and Brazil. Macron's statement reiterated that the current structure of the UN Security Council is outdated and does not reflect the realities of today's world.
In alignment with these sentiments, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also backed India's candidacy, reiterating Moscow's support for both Brazil and India to join the Council as permanent members. Lavrov's endorsement reflects the deepening strategic ties between Russia and India and the recognition of India's growing role on the global stage.
The United States also threw its weight behind the call for reforms. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for broader representation in the Security Council, particularly from developing regions. He stressed that the United States supports permanent seats for Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, alongside countries such as India, which the US has long endorsed.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also echoed support for the Security Council's expansion. Starmer specifically highlighted the inclusion of India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan as necessary changes to the Council's structure to ensure fair representation in global decision-making.
Beyond these major endorsements, countries like Micronesia and Bhutan also expressed gratitude to India for its consistent support and solidarity with smaller nations. Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay praised India's candidacy, highlighting the nation's commitment to fostering development and peace on a global scale.
The discussions at UNGA79 reflected the growing belief among world leaders that the UN Security Council, in its current form, no longer represents the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. The Assembly's general debate, held between September 24 and September 30, was centered around the theme, "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations." This theme underscores the need for more inclusive global leadership, with India being recognized as a crucial player in this evolving global order.
As the international community pushes for reforms, India's prospects of securing a permanent seat on the UN Security Council look increasingly promising. The support from both major powers and smaller nations reflects India's standing as a rising global leader and its ability to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of international governance.
The culmination of discussions and bilateral meetings at UNGA79 has set the stage for potential reforms, with many hoping that the 80th anniversary of the United Nations will bring about the long-awaited changes in the Security Council's composition.
