Investigation Underway Following Outage of Undersea Power Cable Linking Finland and Estonia
A power cable connecting Finland and Estonia under the Baltic Sea experienced an outage, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced on Wednesday. He stated on X that the Estlink-2 cable ceased power transmission, and authorities are currently investigating the issue. Orpo assured that this disruption would not impact Finland's electricity supply.

Estonian network operator Elering confirmed there is sufficient spare capacity to meet power demands in Estonia, as reported by public broadcaster ERR. Concerns about undersea infrastructure in the Baltic have been heightened due to recent incidents involving data cables.
Concerns Over Baltic Infrastructure
In November, two data cables were severed: one between Finland and Germany, and another between Lithuania and Sweden. Germany's defence minister suggested these incidents might be sabotage, although no evidence or responsible parties were identified. This comment was made during a discussion on hybrid warfare threats from Russia.
The Nord Stream natural gas pipelines, which transported gas from Russia to Germany, were damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022. Authorities have labelled this as sabotage and have initiated criminal investigations into the matter.
Previous Issues with Estlink-2
The Estlink-2 cable has faced issues earlier this year due to damage from a short circuit. ERR reported that the cable's complex positioning might have contributed to this problem, leading to extensive repairs.
Authorities remain vigilant about potential threats to critical infrastructure in the region. The recent incidents highlight vulnerabilities and the need for enhanced security measures to protect these vital connections.
The investigation into the current outage is ongoing, with officials working to determine the cause and ensure stability in power transmission between Finland and Estonia. The situation underscores the importance of maintaining robust infrastructure in the Baltic region.
