UN Alerts to Famine Risk for 25 Million Sudanese Without More Aid

The World Food Programme (WFP) urgently needs better access to those at risk of starvation in Sudan and increased financial support from the international community. The UN agency's director, Cindy McCain, highlighted this need on Thursday.

Famine Threatens 25 Million in Sudan

"Sudan's nearly a forgotten crisis right now," McCain told The Associated Press. "There are so many crises going on that people kind of just, you know, it's just too much and their eyes glaze over," she added.

Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

Sudan descended into conflict in mid-April 2023 due to long-standing tensions between military and paramilitary leaders. This conflict began in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to Darfur and other regions. As a result, around 10 million people have been internally displaced, and the country is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. Tens of thousands have died in the ongoing fighting.

WFP has designated entry points to deliver aid to those in need. However, the rainy season has made it difficult for trucks to reach the Zamzam camp, which houses over 400,000 displaced individuals and was declared to have crossed famine thresholds last February.

Challenges in Delivering Aid

"It's taken our trucks almost two weeks to get in there," McCain explained. "Bridges are washed out. Roads are washed out. It's really a combination of tragic situations." She emphasised the need for large-scale intervention and global awareness of the stakes involved if aid does not reach those in need.

WFP has been grappling with funding shortages as donor fatigue set in post-pandemic. The organisation is striving to mitigate this by developing new technologies for predicting weather patterns and providing food during emergencies.

Need for Efficient Solutions

"We have to do more with less. We have to be more efficient, more effective. We have to predict climate change effects and other necessary factors," McCain stated.

The WFP's efforts are crucial as they aim to feed more than 25 million people facing acute hunger in Sudan. The agency continues to call for increased support from the international community to address this dire situation effectively.

The situation in Sudan remains critical, with millions at risk of starvation and displacement. The WFP's call for better access and increased funding highlights the urgent need for global attention and action.
