UN To Investigate Atrocities In Bangladesh Amid Recent Unrest

A United Nations fact-finding team is set to travel to Bangladesh next week to investigate the "atrocities" committed during the recent unrest that led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The interim government announced the investigation on Thursday, following discussions between UN human rights chief Volker Turk and interim Bangladeshi leader Muhammad Yunus.

According to the interim government's statement, the UN team will examine the violence that erupted during the Student Revolution, which began in July and continued into early August. The unrest, triggered by a student movement protesting a controversial job quota system, has led to widespread violence and significant loss of life.

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5, the top Hindu body in Bangladesh reported at least 278 attacks against the Hindu community. The violence has claimed over 230 lives, raising the total death toll to 560 over the past three weeks. The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has announced an investigation into alleged genocide and crimes against humanity committed between July 15 and August 5, including accusations against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nine others.

A complaint filed with the tribunal accuses Hasina and several associates of committing severe human rights violations during the student-led protests. The interim government has pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and has committed to implementing administrative and political reforms under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is now heading the caretaker government.

In addition, a Dhaka court has ordered the police to submit a report by September 15 regarding the killing of grocery shop owner Abu Saeed, who was shot by police during the protests in Mohammadpur on July 19. As the international community scrutinizes the situation, the UN's involvement underscores the global concern over human rights abuses in Bangladesh and the ongoing quest for justice and accountability.
