UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting on Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict Amid Military Actions
The United Nations Security Council convened urgently to address the escalating Middle East conflict. Iran's UN ambassador stated that nearly 200 missiles were launched at Israel as a deterrent against further Israeli aggression. In response, Israel's ambassador labelled this as an unprecedented act of hostility. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised retaliation, while an Iranian commander warned of broader strikes if Israel proceeded.

US President Joe Biden expressed opposition to any Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, tensions rose when Israel's foreign minister declared the UN secretary-general persona non-grata, accusing the organisation of antisemitism. This move intensified longstanding grievances between Israel and the UN.
Conflict on Multiple Fronts
Israel is currently engaged in battles on two fronts. It has initiated a ground offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah and is conducting airstrikes in Gaza. These strikes have resulted in numerous casualties, including children. The Israeli military reported eight soldier fatalities in southern Lebanon.
Since October 8, 2023, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire across the Lebanon border almost daily. This follows a Hamas cross-border attack on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages being taken. In response, Israel declared war on the militant group in Gaza.
Casualties and Statements
Local health officials report over 41,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, with more than half being women and children. During a UN Security Council meeting, Israel's UN ambassador Danny Danon stated that calls for de-escalation are no longer sufficient. He described Iran as a significant threat to global security.
Danon condemned Iran's missile attack on Tuesday as a calculated assault on civilians and an unparalleled act of aggression. He emphasised that Israel will persist until all hostages taken by Hamas and other militants are returned safely to Israel.
Iran's Perspective
Iran's UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani defended the missile launch as a necessary response to ongoing Israeli violence. He argued that Iran has consistently sought peace and stability, but Israeli actions have forced their hand. Iravani accused the US of complicity by arming Israel after the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
Iravani claimed that Iran's restraint has been misinterpreted by Israel as weakness, leading to increased aggression. He insisted that Iran's actions were essential to restore balance and deter further violence.
The situation remains tense as both nations continue to exchange accusations and threats. The international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to prevent further escalation in the region.
