UN Secretary-General Pushes For Neutral Pahalgam Investigation, Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
In a significant diplomatic move, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held separate telephonic conversations with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday, condemning the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, as reported by Hindustan Times. The attack, which tragically claimed 26 lives, primarily tourists, has led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
The UN chief's strong condemnation of the attack comes amidst Pakistan's claims of "credible intelligence" suggesting that India may be planning military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours. The claim has added fuel to the already volatile situation, with Pakistan's federal minister for information and broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, accusing India of preparing military action based on "baseless and concocted" allegations linked to the Pahalgam incident.

In his phone conversation with Shehbaz Sharif, Guterres reaffirmed his condemnation of the terror attack and stressed the need for a transparent and neutral investigation. Sharif, while calling for justice, also urged the UN to help resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, asserting that Pakistan is committed to peace but would defend its sovereignty if provoked.
Meanwhile, in his call with India's Jaishankar, Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Jaishankar acknowledged the UN Secretary-General's condemnation and reaffirmed India's resolve to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice, stressing the importance of accountability.
Guterres, in his conversations, highlighted the significance of addressing these issues through lawful means and offered the UN's assistance in any de-escalation efforts. The UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, reiterated that the Secretary-General's role remains focused on reducing tensions and avoiding further confrontation, which could result in tragic consequences.
The situation remains critical as both countries navigate their responses to the attack, with the international community closely monitoring developments. The UN's role in fostering dialogue and supporting peace efforts remains central as the tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate.
