UN Experts Call For Global Recognition Of Palestinian State Amid Gaza Conflict

A call was made by a group of United Nations experts for the recognition of a Palestinian state by all countries to ensure peace in the Middle East, on Monday.

The call was issued less than a week after Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state.

UN Urges Global Recognition of Palestinian State

This recognition prompted anger from Israel, which has faced increasing isolation after nearly eight months of war in Gaza. It was stated by the experts, including the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories, that recognition of a Palestinian state was an important acknowledgement of the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom and independence, as reported by Reuters.

"This recognition is considered a pre-condition for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East - beginning with the immediate declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza and the cessation of further military incursions into Rafah," it was asserted. It was emphasized that "a two-state solution remains the only internationally agreed path to peace and security for both Palestine and Israel and a way out of generational cycles of violence and resentment," as reported by Hindustan Times citing Reuters.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway, with their recognition of a Palestinian state, aimed to accelerate efforts to secure a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. It was expressed by the three countries that they hope their decision will spur other European Union states to follow suit. However, Denmark's parliament later rejected a proposal to recognize a Palestinian state.

Moves to recognize a Palestinian state have been repeatedly condemned by Israel, which has argued that such actions bolster Hamas, the militant Islamist group responsible for the deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, as per the media reports.

According to Gaza's health ministry, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 36,000 Palestinians. Israel has reported that the Oct. 7 attack, the worst in its 75-year history, resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, with more than 250 hostages taken.
