Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has commenced treatment on Monday, eliciting an outpouring of support from around the world.

Upon the death of his 96-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022, Charles ascended to the throne. Despite generally good health, except injuries sustained from polo and skiing, the palace disclosed that during a recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

The statement from the palace indicated that subsequent diagnostic tests have revealed a form of cancer, although it did not specify the type or stage. Treatment has begun, with no further details provided.

Despite the diagnosis, the palace emphasized that the king "remains wholly positive" and anticipates resuming full public duties at the earliest opportunity. Doctors have advised him to defer public engagements, although he will continue to carry out state business and official paperwork as usual.

How will the King's duties change while he is treated for cancer?

It was stated by Buckingham Palace that "Regrettably, a number of the King's forthcoming public engagements will have to be rearranged or postponed."

"All those who may be disappointed or inconvenienced as a consequence," His Majesty would like to apologize to, according to the statement.

The palace mentioned that expert care is being provided to him and that he "looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible."

During the King's recovery period, it is expected that engagements will continue to be attended by the Queen.

"A full programme of public duties will be continued by Her Majesty," Buckingham Palace stated.

Despite stepping back from public events, paperwork and private meetings as head of state will continue to be attended to by the King.
