Zelensky Urges Urgent Boost To Air Defences After Deadly Kyiv Strike

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again urged for increased air-defence systems following Russian missile attacks on Kyiv that resulted in seven deaths. The strikes targeted residential buildings in the capital on Friday. As the conflict nears its fourth year, diplomatic efforts remain unsuccessful, and concerns about Ukraine's energy security are rising with another winter approaching.

On Saturday, Ukraine reported that Russian assaults had claimed four lives in its southern region. Zelensky emphasised the need for "support that saves lives: more air-defence systems, more protective capabilities and greater resolve from our partners," through a social media post. The death toll from Friday's attack on Kyiv increased to seven after an elderly woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Russian Strikes and Ukrainian Retaliation

Zelensky highlighted that one of the victims was Nataliia Khodemnchuk, whose husband was an operator at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant during the 1986 disaster. "Nearly four decades later, Nataliia was killed in a new tragedy caused once again by the Kremlin," he stated. Other casualties included a couple in their 70s and a 62-year-old individual.

In response to these events, Ukraine announced it had targeted a Russian oil refinery near Moscow. The Ukrainian military confirmed via social media that they struck a refinery in the Ryazan region as part of efforts to diminish Russia's capacity to conduct missile and bomb attacks.

Ongoing Conflict and Military Actions

Throughout Russia's invasion since 2022, Ukraine has consistently launched missile and drone attacks within Russian territory. Ryazan governor Pavel Malkov reported that Russian air defences intercepted 25 Ukrainian drones over the region overnight. "Falling debris caused a fire on the premises of one enterprise" but there were no casualties, Malkov shared on Telegram.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate with each passing day. Despite numerous attempts at diplomacy, peace remains elusive as both sides persist with military actions.
