Zelenskyy Confirms Ukraine's Strategic Incursion into Russian Territory

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indirectly acknowledged Ukraine's recent military actions in Russia's Kursk region. In his Saturday night address, he mentioned efforts to "push the war out into the aggressor's territory." This marks the first official comment on the operation.

Ukraines Bold Move into Russia

Ukrainian officials reported a fire near the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Power Plant late Sunday. Local authorities claimed it was a provocation by Russian forces and called for action from Western allies and the UN atomic watchdog.

Ukraine's Incursion into Russia

Ukraine's incursion into Russia continued for a sixth day on Sunday. This is the largest such attack since Moscow's full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. The use of Ukrainian military units on Russian soil is unprecedented.

The raid caught Moscow off guard, embarrassing Russian military leaders who scrambled to contain the breach. Civilians living in Russia's border areas with Ukraine were evacuated on Sunday. Russian state television showed footage of evacuees at a tent camp in Kursk, with more than 20 temporary accommodation centres set up in the region.

Military Strategy and Secrecy

The exact aims of Ukraine's operation remain unclear. Ukrainian military officials have adopted a policy of secrecy, likely to ensure its success. Military experts suggest it aims to draw Russian reserves away from intense fighting in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. A presidential adviser hinted it might strengthen Kyiv's position in future negotiations with Russia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticised the attacks, saying they "make no sense from a military point of view." She added, "The Kyiv regime is continuing its terrorist activity with the sole purpose of intimidating the peaceful population of Russia."

Blame Game Over Zaporizhzhia Fire

In Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine and Russia traded blame for an alleged fire at the power plant. Ukrainian officials circulated a video showing smoke near one of the plant's towers. Yevhen Yevtushenko, head of Nikopol's military administration, claimed Russian forces set fire to automobile tyres in cooling towers to create panic.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of using the plant to blackmail Ukraine and play on Western fears of escalation. Meanwhile, Yevhen Balytskyi, the Russia-appointed governor of occupied Zaporizhzhia, accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the plant and causing the fire but provided no evidence.

Russian Attacks on Kyiv

Overnight into Sunday, a Russian drone and missile barrage on Kyiv killed two people, including a 4-year-old boy. Russia attacked Ukraine with four ballistic missiles and 57 Shahed drones; Ukraine's air force shot down 53 drones.

The bodies of a 35-year-old man and his son were found under rubble after missile fragments fell on a residential area in Kyiv's suburban Brovary district. Another three people were wounded in the attack.

Increased Drone Attacks

Kursk's regional governor reported that a Ukrainian missile shot down by Russian air defences fell on a residential building, wounding 15 people. Acting governor Aleksei Smirnov said a "Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group" entered Belovsky district but that the situation had been "stabilised."

The Russian Defence Ministry stated that 35 drones were shot down overnight over Kursk, Voronezh, Belgorod, Bryansk, and Oryol regions. Ukraine has not commented on these drone attacks but has increased similar attacks targeting military infrastructure and oil depots recently.

Belarus' Response

Belarus announced it was sending more troops to its border with Ukraine on Saturday. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Belarusian air defence forces destroyed dozens of targets flying from Ukraine over Mogilev region on Friday evening.

"The Ukrainian armed forces violated all rules of conduct and violated the airspace of the Republic of Belarus," Lukashenko said during a meeting in Minsk. Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin called it a provocation and stated they are "ready for retaliatory action."

Zelenskyy reiterated calls for Western allies to increase assistance to Ukraine. He emphasised that "to really stop Russian terror, we need not only a full-fledged air shield that will protect all our cities and communities but also strong decisions from partners—decisions that will remove restrictions on our defensive actions."
