UK Government Endorses Local Inquiries into Organised Child Sexual Abuse Gangs Following Elon Musk's Controversial Remarks
The UK government has announced its support for several local investigations into organised child sexual abuse. This decision follows increased attention on the issue, partly due to Elon Musk's comments. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that a "rapid audit" will assess the extent of gang-based exploitation nationwide and provide recommendations.

Musk criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not endorsing a national inquiry after Oldham's local authority requested one. In Oldham, police discovered that groups of men sexually exploited girls under 18 during the 2000s and 2010s. Musk also accused Starmer of failing to prosecute offenders when he was England's chief prosecutor from 2008 to 2013, an allegation Starmer denied.
Focus on Local Inquiries
The government has shifted its stance by supporting inquiries in Oldham and four other areas. Previously, it suggested no further investigations were needed after numerous past inquiries. Cooper confirmed that £10 million (USD 12.5 million) will be allocated to support these efforts, with half directed towards the inquiries.
Cooper emphasised that local inquiries can provide more detailed and relevant insights than a nationwide investigation. "As we have seen, effective local inquiries can delve into far more local detail and deliver more locally relevant answers, and change, than a lengthy nationwide inquiry can provide," she said.
Political Reactions and Concerns
The main opposition Conservative Party argued that Cooper's measures are inadequate, noting around 50 areas affected by grooming gangs. They expressed concerns that local inquiries might lack the power to summon witnesses, unlike a national inquiry.
The issue has been politicised due to the ethnic backgrounds of those involved in past cases. Predominantly white girls were abused by men mainly from Pakistani backgrounds, leading far-right activists to link child sexual abuse to immigration and accuse politicians of covering up crimes to avoid appearing racist.
Previous Inquiries and Recommendations
A previous seven-year inquiry under the Conservative government made 20 recommendations in 2022, including compensating abuse victims. However, many recommendations remain unimplemented. Cooper acknowledged this delay, stating that "much valuable time has already been lost," causing further trauma to victims and survivors.
Musk responded positively to the government's decision on X, saying, "I hope this is a proper investigation." The government's move marks a significant change in its approach to addressing these serious allegations.
