UK Labour Disowns Candidate Over Israel Comments
The UKs opposition Labour Party has disowned an election candidate who claimed that Israel allowed Hamas attack as a pretext to invade Gaza.
In a significant development, the United Kingdom's opposition Labour Party has disowned one of its election candidates, Azhar Ali, due to controversial remarks he made regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. Ali, who was selected to run for Labour in a special election for the House of Commons seat representing Rochdale, had claimed that Israel allowed Hamas's October 7 attack as a pretext to invade Gaza.

Ali's Controversial Remarks
Ali's comments, which were made during a local party meeting last year, were published by a newspaper, sparking widespread criticism. In his remarks, Ali suggested that Israel had deliberately allowed the Hamas attack to occur in order to justify an invasion of Gaza. He also made other controversial statements, including questioning the legitimacy of the State of Israel and expressing support for the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Labour's Response
Following the publication of Ali's remarks, the Labour Party faced mounting pressure to take action. Initially, the party did not immediately suspend Ali, but senior Labour figures condemned his comments as "totally unacceptable." However, in light of the increasing backlash, Labour announced on Monday that it had withdrawn its support for Ali, although it was too late to replace him on the ballot.
Starmer's Leadership and Labour's Shift
The disowning of Ali reflects the significant changes that have taken place within the Labour Party since Keir Starmer became its leader in 2020. Starmer has sought to steer the party back towards the political center after the divisive tenure of his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn, who held strong socialist views and advocated for nationalizing key industries and infrastructure.
Under Starmer's leadership, Labour has repaired its relations with the UK's Jewish community and vowed to root out anti-Semitism within the party. This shift in stance is particularly notable given Corbyn's strong support for the Palestinian cause and his previous suspension from the party over allegations of downplaying the extent of anti-Semitism within Labour.
Upcoming Election and Other Candidates
The special election in Rochdale, triggered by the death of the previous Labour lawmaker, is scheduled for February 29. Despite the controversy surrounding Ali's remarks, he was considered the frontrunner to win the election. However, other candidates, including George Galloway, a former Labour lawmaker who now represents the Workers Party, are also vying for the seat.
Galloway, known for his outspoken views, has been critical of Labour's stance on the Israel-Hamas war. While Labour has criticized Israel's conduct of the war and the impact on Palestinian civilians, it has not called for an immediate ceasefire. Galloway, on the other hand, has taken a more critical stance towards Israel.
UK Government's Sanctions on Israeli Settlers
In a separate development, the UK's Conservative government announced on Monday that it was imposing sanctions on four Israeli settlers accused of committing human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans, and they mark the first time the UK has taken such action against Israeli individuals.
The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the government for taking a stand against human rights abuses, while others have expressed concern that it could damage relations with Israel.
The disowning of Azhar Ali by the UK Labour Party highlights the ongoing challenges the party faces in balancing its commitment to social justice with the need to maintain unity and credibility. As the party prepares for an upcoming election, it remains to be seen how the controversy surrounding Ali's remarks will impact its electoral prospects.
