UK Government Appeals to Elon Musk for Prudence on Social Media During Unrest

The British government has urged Elon Musk to act responsibly after his social media platform, X, was used to post comments that officials believe could exacerbate the ongoing violent unrest in the country. Justice Minister Heidi Alexander addressed the issue on Tuesday morning, following Musk's statement that "Civil war is inevitable" in the UK.

Government's Response to Social Media Comments

Alexander emphasised the importance of responsible language use, especially during times of crisis. She told Times Radio, "Use of language such as a civil war is in no way acceptable. We are seeing police officers being seriously injured, buildings set alight, and so I really do think that everyone who has a platform should be exercising their power responsibly."

The unrest in Britain has persisted for over a week, with police clashing with crowds chanting anti-immigrant and Islamophobic slogans across various cities and towns. The violence was sparked by misinformation spread on social media about a knife attack that killed three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event on July 29.

Prime Minister's Measures to Address Unrest

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the riots as "far-right thuggery" and announced on Monday that the government would deploy a "standing army" of specialist police officers to control the situation. Additionally, the government is urging social media companies like Musk's X to take more action against the spread of misleading and inflammatory information online.

Alexander mentioned that the government is considering strengthening the existing Online Safety Act, which was approved last year but won't be fully implemented until 2025. She told the BBC, "We’ve been working with the social media companies, and some of the action that they’ve taken already with the automatic removal of some false information is to be welcomed. But there is undoubtedly more that the social media companies could and should be doing."

Musk has continued to engage in debates about the violence in Britain. After Starmer posted on X stating that the government "will not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities," Musk responded by questioning if all communities should be protected equally. He also attached a similar comment to a video claiming to show a "Muslim patrol" attacking a pub in Birmingham, sharing it with his 193 million followers.

Expert Opinions on Musk's Actions

Alex Krasodomski from Chatham House noted that Musk often takes a combative approach towards critics, unlike traditional Silicon Valley firms. "He has sparred with UK and EU policymakers in the past when they have questioned his approaches to content moderation on the platform," Krasodomski said.

Stephanie Alice Baker, a sociologist at City University of London, highlighted Musk's history of making provocative statements. She explained that Musk frequently comments on geopolitical issues and his fans often defend him when he faces criticism. Baker added, "Musk’s following represents the cult of the entrepreneur... By questioning convention, they are depicted as gifted visionaries who can predict the future and bring it into being."

Earlier this year, Musk clashed with a Brazilian supreme court justice over free speech issues and accused Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro of election fraud after disputed elections. These comments are closely watched by those attracted to his business success.

X did not respond to an email seeking comment and rarely responds to media requests.

The British government remains focused on addressing both the immediate violence and the broader issue of misinformation spread through social media platforms like X.
