, the Met office on Wednesday issued its 'most severe red warning' as strong

According to a BBC report, the hurricane-force winds have battered parts of UK as wind gusts of over 100 mph were recorded. It led to power- cut in thousands of homes and transport disruptions.

In Berkshire and Surrey, 14 severe flood warnings were in place while in Somerset, two remained in place.

On Tuesday, scientists warned that floods in UK could last for months.

A groundwater scientist at the British Geological Survey told a news agency, "groundwater levels are now so high that parts of Britain face a serious risk of flooding for weeks or even months to come. The risk of flooding could remain high until May."

Since last week, hundreds of homes were swamped by floods along the River Thames while British Prime Minister David Cameron warned that stricken communities were "in it for the long haul".
