UK Elections 2024: Why Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives Are Facing A Big Defeat And Possible Extinction
The Conservative Party in the UK is expected to lose the upcoming elections after 14 years, with Labour predicted to secure a significant victory. Rishi Sunak faces the risk of losing his seat amidst dissatisfaction with economic and social policies.
The Conservative Party in the United Kingdom is poised to lose power after 14 years of governance.
Opinion polls indicate a significant defeat for the Conservatives, with the Labour Party predicted to win by a large margin. Some surveys even suggest that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak might lose his own seat, as reported by First Post.

Labour Party's Promises
The Labour Party has pledged to abolish Sunak's immigration policy and lower net migration. They also aim to stimulate economic growth, address issues within the National Health Service (NHS), and avoid raising taxes for working individuals.
Since 2010, the Conservatives have been in power, starting with David Cameron as prime minister. Cameron introduced budget cuts and navigated the UK through the aftermath of the global financial crisis. He was followed by Theresa May, who faced challenges in securing parliamentary approval for the Brexit deal and eventually resigned, as reported by First Post.
Challenges Faced by Conservatives
Boris Johnson succeeded May and managed to deliver Brexit, but his tenure was marred by corruption allegations and scandals. The Partygate scandal led to Johnson's resignation, paving the way for Liz Truss. However, Truss's brief term was overshadowed by failed tax plans.
Rishi Sunak then took over as prime minister. Despite some economic improvements under his leadership, previous damages had already taken their toll, as reported. The pandemic, inflation, Brexit, and a housing crisis have all negatively impacted the UK's economy.
Economic and Social Issues
Voters are dissatisfied with the NHS's performance and the increasing cost of living. Sunak's immigration policy, which includes sending undocumented immigrants to Rwanda, has also sparked controversy and been labelled as inhumane.
The Labour Party is expected to secure a majority of seats while reducing the Conservatives to just 102 seats—a loss of 263 seats from the last general election. This would mark a historic shift in power dynamics within the UK government, as per media reports.
The Conservative decline can be attributed to several factors over recent years. Cameron's budget cuts were followed by May's struggles with Brexit negotiations. Johnson's administration faced numerous scandals, culminating in his resignation due to Partygate.
Sunak’s tenure has seen some economic recovery; however, issues like inflation and housing remain critical concerns for voters, as reported by First Post. Additionally, dissatisfaction with public services such as healthcare continues to grow among citizens.
The upcoming elections are set to bring significant changes in UK politics. With Labour promising reforms and addressing key voter concerns, they appear well-positioned for victory against an embattled Conservative Party.
