UAE Sets Ambitious Green Targets for Urban Development
Officials and industry experts in the UAE have convened at a significant roundtable in Dubai to discuss sustainable practices for the nation's built environment. Aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and advance towards ambitious net-zero goals, the dialogue was marked by contributions from key figures and the outline of strategic national programs like the DSM Program 2050.
At a significant roundtable event in Dubai, UAE officials gathered to discuss a blueprint for sustainable practices in the nation's built environment. The UAE Built Environment Sustainability Blueprint Roundtable, an initiative bridging policy makers and industry experts, sought to chart a course for the future of the nation's urban landscape. Sharif Al Olama, the Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Razan Al Mubarak, the appointed UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, were among the key figures contributing to this pivotal dialogue.
Assessing the Environmental Footprint of Buildings
During the session, organized by both the High-Level Climate Champions team and Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), participants evaluated the current condition and environmental impact of the UAE's building and construction sector. Razan Al Mubarak highlighted the sector's significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, citing that buildings are responsible for 27 percent of the UAE's emissions, based on 2019 data. Al Mubarak emphasized that the building sector has the potential to deliver a substantial reduction in emissions, up to 85 percent by 2030, and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to drive climate policy and market solutions forward.

Advancing Towards Net-Zero Goals
Al Olama outlined the challenges the sector faces in aiming for a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050, especially in light of rapid urban development. He stressed the crucial role of the private sector in bridging the gap to meet decarbonization targets, leveraging their expertise and resources to enhance sustainability. Al Olama also underscored the active role of the Ministry in formulating regulations and initiatives to support this transformation.
Strategic National Programs for Sustainability
The UAE's National Demand Side Management (DSM) Program 2050, as explained by Al Olama, is a strategic effort targeting energy and water-intensive sectors, including the built environment. The ambitious program aims to substantially reduce energy demand by 40 percent and water usage by 50 percent by 2050. The implementation in the built environment sector alone is anticipated to yield significant financial savings of around AED 139 billion and cut CO2 emissions by 74 metric tonnes by mid-century.
Through the collective efforts of the government and key stakeholders, the UAE is making strides towards a more sustainable future. This roundtable marked a critical step in uniting various entities to address climate issues and create a more resilient and environmentally conscious built environment. As COP28 approaches, such initiatives underscore the UAE's commitment to global climate goals and the pursuit of innovative solutions for sustainable development. The discourse at the roundtable has laid down a foundation for ongoing collaboration, setting the stage for the nation to emerge as a leader in sustainable urbanization.
In conclusion, the UAE Built Environment Sustainability Blueprint Roundtable serves as a testament to the country's proactive stance on addressing climate change and enhancing sustainability within its borders. With concerted efforts and a shared vision, the UAE is poised to meet its environmental targets and contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change, ensuring a greener future for generations to come.
