Dubais COP28 Sees Major Retail Pledge for a Greener Tomorrow
On December 7, 2023, at COP28, Majid Al Futtaim Retail and 16 FMCG partners pledged to achieve Collaborative Impact Goals, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable packaging, and promoting healthier products. This initiative aligns with the UAE's Net Zero target by 2050 and highlights the critical role of the retail industry in global sustainability efforts.
In the heart of Dubai, a monumental stride was taken towards a greener future as Majid Al Futtaim Retail, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in the UAE, united with 16 FMCG partners under the guidance of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). Together, they have committed to the Collaborative Impact Goals (CIGs) at the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28), setting a powerful example of joint action for sustainability.
Commitment to Collaboration and Sustainability
The UAE Pavilion in the Green Zone was abuzz with leaders and partners focused on making a positive environmental impact. Among them, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, highlighted the importance of united action in tackling climate challenges. Carrefour's initiative is a pioneering approach in retail, aiming to secure the planet's future and that of the local communities by transforming end-to-end sustainability operations.

Strategic Pledge for a Sustainable Tomorrow
The landmark pledge made by Majid Al Futtaim Retail and its partners encompasses three core CIGs. It begins with the crucial goal of reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions, where the signatories are dedicated to measuring, reporting, and actively lowering carbon emissions of products available at Carrefour. The ambitious objective includes slashing one billion kilogrammes of CO2 emissions by 2030, addressing the significant 93% of Scope 3 emissions that Carrefour is responsible for. Additionally, the parties may voluntarily commit to the subsequent goals of Sustainable Packaging and promoting Healthier More Sustainable Products.
UAE at the Forefront of Climate Action
Mariam Almheiri emphasized the UAE's leadership in prioritizing food security and sustainable agriculture as part of its COP28 Presidency. The private sector's role, especially in retail, is crucial in meeting the national Net Zero target by 2050. Majid Al Futtaim Retail's pledge is a testament to the collaborative efforts required to actualize a sustainable future.
Leading by Example
Hani Weiss, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim – Retail, expressed gratitude to their industry partners and Mariam Almheiri for their support in Carrefour's sustainability journey. The company's proactive and transparent approach has enabled it to forge strong partnerships and empower consumers to make sustainable choices. Weiss underlined the ongoing commitment to innovative solutions for reducing Carrefour's carbon footprint, a sentiment that resonates with a future-facing vision.
Innovative Forums to Drive Change
Earlier this year, the Supplier Sustainability Forum was launched, marking a united front with FMCG partners, MOCCAE, and the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. This initiative has placed Carrefour at the forefront of the retail industry's effort to tackle global environmental challenges. In 2024, the forum plans to establish working groups to pinpoint priority projects aligned with each of the CIGs.
As we look ahead, the pledge at COP28 by Majid Al Futtaim Retail and its FMCG partners is more than a promise; it represents a burgeoning movement for sustainability within the retail sector. This commitment not only enhances the credibility of Carrefour but also sets a standard for others to follow. It is an encouraging step for the common man, who stands to benefit from a healthier and more sustainable environment nurtured by responsible retail practices. The path to a sustainable future is being paved with the collective efforts of government entities, industry leaders, and communities, all united in the pursuit of a better tomorrow.
