Turo-Rented Vehicles Involved in Two Fatal Incidents on New Year's Day

Two tragic events on New Year's Day involved vehicles rented through Turo, a peer-to-peer car-sharing service. In New Orleans, 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowd in the French Quarter, killing 14 people. Police later shot Jabbar during a firefight. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump's hotel, killing Matthew Livelsberger, an active-duty US Army Green Beret.

Turo Cars Linked to Fatal New Years Events

The FBI has stated that there is "no definitive link" between the New Orleans attack and the Las Vegas explosion, despite both incidents involving Turo-rented vehicles. Turo expressed its devastation over these events and pledged to assist authorities in their investigations. The incidents have brought attention to the car-sharing platform and its operations.

Understanding Turo's Car Sharing Platform

Turo is a peer-to-peer car-sharing company that allows vehicle owners to rent out their cars to nearby drivers. Car owners, known as "hosts," set rental prices and availability through Turo's website or app. The platform operates in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and France. Established nearly 15 years ago, Turo was initially called "RelayRides" before rebranding in 2015.

In the New Year's Day incidents, both vehicles were rented via Turo. The Tesla Cybertruck involved in the Las Vegas explosion was rented through Turo's app in Colorado. Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed they know who rented the truck but withheld the name pending further investigation. Similarly, the pickup truck used in New Orleans was also rented on Turo.

Turo's Response and Cooperation with Authorities

Turo has confirmed its collaboration with law enforcement to provide any necessary information for ongoing investigations. The company stated that neither renter had a criminal background that would have flagged them as security threats. Turo expressed condolences to the victims and their families in a statement.

Despite the lack of a direct connection between the two incidents, these events have highlighted concerns about vehicle rentals on platforms like Turo. The company continues to work closely with authorities to ensure all relevant details are shared as investigations proceed.

The tragic events have raised questions about safety measures within peer-to-peer car-sharing services. As investigations continue, Turo remains committed to supporting law enforcement efforts and addressing any potential security issues related to its platform.
