Turkiye Strikes Kurdish Militant Sites in Northern Iraq, Targets PKK

Turkiye has launched a fresh series of airstrikes against Kurdish militants in Iraq, targeting the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, the Turkish defence ministry confirmed on Monday. The operation focused on the PKK's suspected hideouts in Hakurk, Metina, and Gara, resulting in the death of 16 militants, including commanders. This action underscores Turkiye's ongoing efforts to counter PKK activities, a group involved in a long-standing insurgency against the Turkish state since the 1980s.

Turkiyes New Strikes on PKK in Iraq

The PKK, which seeks Kurdish autonomy in southeast Turkiye, has been designated a terrorist organisation by Turkiye and its Western allies. The conflict with the PKK has led to a significant loss of life over the decades, with tens of thousands of casualties reported since the insurgency began in 1984. Despite its controversial status and the severe implications of its actions, there was no immediate response from the PKK regarding the recent airstrikes.

The timing of these airstrikes is particularly noteworthy, coming weeks after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Iraq—the first in 12 years. During his visit, Erdogan sought to bolster cooperation with Baghdad to combat PKK militants more effectively. He had previously announced plans for a major operation against the PKK this summer, aiming to eliminate the threat it poses permanently.

While Baghdad has historically expressed concerns over Turkiye's military actions within its borders as violations of its sovereignty, recent developments indicate a shift towards tacit approval of Ankara's anti-PKK measures. In March, following discussions between Iraqi and Turkish foreign ministers, Baghdad announced that the Iraqi National Security Council had issued a ban on the PKK. However, it refrained from labelling the group as a terrorist organisation.

This latest military engagement by Turkiye against PKK positions in Iraq highlights the complex dynamics of regional security and sovereignty issues. It also reflects Turkiye's determined stance on addressing threats to its national security, as articulated by the defence ministry's commitment to "rescue Turkiye from this problem." The ongoing conflict with the PKK remains a significant challenge for Turkiye, involving intricate political and military considerations.
