Trump and Xi Discuss Iran Situation Amid US Push for Isolation of Tehran

President Trump and President Xi Jinping engaged in a call addressing the situation in Iran while also covering critical US-China relations topics like trade and Taiwan. The discussion highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two nations.

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently discussed Iran during a comprehensive phone call. This conversation comes as the US urges China and others to isolate Tehran. The two leaders also covered various significant topics in the US-China relationship, such as trade, Taiwan, and Trump's planned visit to Beijing in April. Trump shared on social media that his relationship with Xi is very positive, emphasising its importance.

The Chinese government released a statement about the call, noting discussions on major summits both countries will host in the coming year. However, it did not mention Trump's anticipated visit to Beijing in April. China reiterated its stance on Taiwan, stating it will never allow the island to separate from China. Taiwan operates independently but is claimed by Beijing as part of its territory.

US-China Trade and Global Relations

Trump's administration has been pushing for changes in global trade dynamics. Last month, Trump announced a 25% tax on imports from countries trading with Iran. Despite sanctions aimed at halting Iran's nuclear ambitions, Tehran conducted nearly USD 125 billion in international trade in 2024. This includes USD 32 billion with China, USD 28 billion with the UAE, and USD 17 billion with Turkey, according to the World Trade Organization.

In a related development, Xi Jinping also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This interaction occurs as the New START treaty between Russia and the US is set to expire soon. The treaty's expiration would remove limits on the two largest nuclear arsenals for the first time in over fifty years. Trump has expressed interest in maintaining nuclear weapon limits but wants China included in any new agreement.

Global Supply Chains and Critical Minerals

The call between Trump and Xi coincided with a ministerial meeting in Washington. The Trump administration gathered several European, Asian, and African nations to discuss rebuilding global supply chains for critical minerals without relying on Beijing. These minerals are essential for products like jet engines and smartphones, where China currently dominates the market.

Vice President JD Vance highlighted the opportunity for self-reliance at this gathering. "What is before all of us is an opportunity at self-reliance that we never have to rely on anybody else except for each other," he said regarding critical minerals needed for sustaining industries and growth.

Xi has been engaging with Western leaders amid concerns about Trump's tariff policies and his calls for the US to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory. The disruption caused by Trump's trade policies has made expanding trade and investment crucial for many US economic partners.

International Trade Developments

Recent international developments include Vietnam and the European Union upgrading their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership last month. This occurred just two days after the EU and India announced a free-trade agreement. Such moves reflect efforts by various nations to strengthen economic ties amidst global trade uncertainties.

In addition to these developments, special envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to engage in talks with Iranian officials later this week. Tensions remain high between Washington and Tehran following Iran's crackdown on protests last month. The US continues to press Iran for concessions on its nuclear program.

Trump previously stated his desire for China's involvement in future nuclear agreements: "I actually feel strongly that if we're going to do it, I think China should be a member of the extension," he told The New York Times last month.
