US President Donald Trump said he held a long and productive phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, covering a wide range of global and bilateral issues. The call, which Trump described as "excellent," focused on trade, security, geopolitics, and future cooperation between the two countries.

Trump shared details of the discussion on Truth Social, calling the exchange positive and forward-looking. He said both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between the United States and China.

Trade, Energy, and Agriculture Take Centre Stage

According to Trump, trade was a key part of the conversation. He said China is considering purchasing more oil and gas from the United States, which could help balance trade ties between the two countries.

Agricultural trade was also discussed. Trump claimed China is reviewing plans to increase soybean imports from the US to 20 million tonnes for the current season, with a commitment of 25 million tonnes for the next season. Such a move would be a boost for American farmers, who have faced uncertainty due to shifting global markets.

Other economic topics included airplane engine deliveries and broader commercial cooperation.

April China Visit and Diplomatic Engagement

Trump said he is planning to visit China in April and expressed enthusiasm about the trip. He described his personal relationship with Xi as "extremely good" and said both leaders understand the value of keeping diplomatic ties stable.

However, China's official readout of the call did not confirm Trump's expected April visit. Instead, Beijing said the leaders spoke about major international summits planned by both countries and possible opportunities to meet in the coming year.

Taiwan Issue Remains Firm Point for Beijing

The sensitive issue of Taiwan was also discussed. China reiterated its long-standing position that Taiwan is part of its territory and made clear it has no intention of changing its reunification plans.

Taiwan is a self-governing, democratic island that operates independently, but Beijing continues to claim it as its own. The Chinese government stated firmly that Taiwan would not be allowed to separate from China, highlighting a major area of disagreement between Washington and Beijing.

Iran Tensions and Nuclear Concerns Discussed

Iran featured prominently in the talks as tensions remain high between Washington and Tehran. Trump said he raised concerns about Iran's internal situation and its nuclear programme.

The US administration is pushing Iran to make concessions on nuclear activities, following recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites during a short but intense conflict involving Israel. The White House has said that special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to take part in talks with Iranian officials soon.
Trump also recently announced a 25 per cent tariff on imports from countries that continue to do business with Iran, aiming to increase pressure on Tehran.

The leaders also touched on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as broader military and security matters.
Trump said he believes the discussions with Xi could lead to positive outcomes over the next three years of his presidency. He stressed that cooperation between the US and China is critical for global stability.

While differences remain on key issues such as Taiwan and Iran, the call suggests that both leaders are keeping diplomatic channels open. For now, Trump has framed the conversation as a step toward continued engagement with China at a time of global uncertainty.
