Trump Advises Michigan GOP to Target Black Voters in Detroit for 2024 Strategy

In a strategic move to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections, former US President Donald Trump has directed the Michigan GOP to focus on engaging Black voters in Detroit and other predominantly African American regions within the swing state. This directive was shared by state GOP leaders who recently convened with Trump in Florida to deliberate on tactics for winning Michigan, a state pivotal to both parties' success in the November elections.

Trumps Strategy: Engage Detroits Black Voters

According to Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra, discussions with Trump emphasized outreach to minority voters in southeast Michigan, an area critical of President Joe Biden's handling of international conflicts. The strategy involves engaging African American and Hispanic communities across various counties, including Wayne County, which encompasses much of metro Detroit and has historically been a Democratic stronghold.

The push for minority voter engagement comes amid concerns from Democratic leaders in southeast Michigan about potential unrest among Black voters, traditionally a reliable constituency for the party. A February AP-NORC poll indicated a significant drop in Biden's approval rating among Black adults, from 94 per cent in January 2021 to 58 per cent. However, Trump's favorability among the same demographic remains low at 24 per cent.

Hoekstra highlighted that the Trump campaign is particularly interested in Wayne County, where Biden secured nearly 70 per cent of the vote in 2020. The campaign also aims to regain support in Saginaw, Kent, and Ottawa counties, areas where Trump performed well in 2016 but saw a decline in 2020.

The Biden campaign has responded to Trump's efforts by reminding Michigan voters of his "racist record" and alleged failures during his presidency. Alyssa Bradley, the Biden campaign's Michigan communications director, criticized Trump's attempt to win over voters as "desperate pandering."

Despite these ambitious outreach plans, the Michigan GOP faces significant challenges, including financial constraints and internal discord following the leadership of Kristina Karamo. Hoekstra is working diligently to revitalize the party's fundraising efforts but acknowledges that there is a long way to go to match previous election cycles' financial achievements.

As both campaigns ramp up their efforts in Michigan, GOP chairs from two of the state's largest counties have also met with senior Trump adviser James Blair to discuss strategies for engaging minority voters as early as possible. The sense of urgency is palpable among Michigan Republicans, who view winning the state as crucial to their success in the upcoming elections.
