Trump Threatens to Reopen Fight Over Affordable Care Act

Former President Donald Trump threatened over the weekend to reopen the contentious fight over the Affordable Care Act, saying he is seriously looking at alternatives if he wins a second term.

Former President Donald Trump has threatened to reopen the contentious fight over the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, if he wins a second term in the 2024 presidential election. Trump made the comments on his Truth Social site, saying that the cost of Obamacare is out of control and that he is seriously looking at alternatives.

Trumps Latest Threat: Gutting the Affordable Care Act

Democrats Criticize Trump's Proposal

Trump's comments drew swift criticism from the Democratic Party, with Biden-Harris 2024 spokesperson Ammar Moussa calling them another extremist proposal from the GOP front-runner. Moussa said that Trump's America is one where millions of people lose their health insurance and seniors and families across the country face exorbitant costs just to stay healthy.

Healthcare as a Key Issue in the 2024 Election

The back-and-forth between Trump and the Democrats points to what could be a key issue in a general election rematch between the two if they both win their parties' nominations. Biden's team has been operating under the assumption that Trump would be the GOP nominee and has stepped up efforts in recent weeks to cast his proposals as extreme and to paint him as a danger to democracy.

Trump's Focus on Immigration and Political Rivals

Trump, for his part, has laid out an aggressive agenda for a potential second term that has focused on immigration crackdowns and mass deportations, as well as efforts to target political rivals. He has not spent much time discussing healthcare, but his comments on Saturday suggest that he may make it a more prominent issue in the campaign.

Public Opinion on the Affordable Care Act

Public opinion polls show that the Affordable Care Act remains popular with a majority of Americans. A KFF poll conducted in May 2023 found that about six in 10 Americans have a favorable opinion of the law. Additionally, a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 37% of Americans trust Democrats to do a better job than Republicans on handling healthcare, versus about one in five — 18% — who trust Republicans over Democrats on this issue.

Biden's Approval Ratings on Healthcare

However, a June 2023 AP-NORC poll showed that a minority of US adults — 44% — approve of how Biden is handling healthcare, with 53% disapproving. This includes 69% of Democrats and 17% of Republicans.

Trump's Response to Concerns About Prescription Drug Costs

Trump's comments on the Affordable Care Act came in response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed he shared highlighting concerns raised by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) that large insurance companies are using their pharmacies to evade federal requirements that limit the percentage of premium dollars spent on profits and administration, known as the Medical Loss Ratio (MLR). This has resulted in sky-high prescription drug costs and excessive corporate profits.

Democrats' Concerns About Trump's Potential Actions

Moussa warned that Trump would try to repeal the Affordable Care Act if he returns to power, saying that he was one vote away from getting it done when he was president. He urged voters to take Trump at his word that he would try to do it again.

The Affordable Care Act has provided health insurance coverage to millions of Americans and has been a key issue in previous elections. The debate over the law is likely to continue to be a major issue in the 2024 presidential election.
