Trump Proposes Regaining Control of Panama Canal Due to High Shipping Fees

Donald Trump has hinted at a possible attempt by his administration to regain control of the Panama Canal. He criticised the fees charged to shippers using this crucial link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Speaking at a rally, Trump described the U.S. decision to cede control of the canal as "foolish." The canal, handed over to Panama in 1999, remains vital for global trade.

Trumps Plan for Panama Canal Control

Trump's comments came during his first major rally since winning the presidency on November 5. Addressing supporters at Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in Arizona, he promised economic growth and secure borders. He also mentioned resolving conflicts in Israel and Ukraine swiftly. "I can proudly proclaim that the Golden Age of America is upon us," Trump stated, highlighting a renewed spirit in the country.

Republican Unity and Budget Disputes

The rally, attended by over 20,000 activists, aimed to project Republican unity despite recent budget disputes in Washington. Trump's influence was evident as House Republicans rejected a bipartisan deal after he and Elon Musk opposed it on social media. Although some lawmakers defied Trump's request to raise the debt ceiling, no government shutdown occurred.

During his speech in Phoenix, Trump did not address these congressional issues directly but acknowledged Musk's growing influence. Responding to suggestions that he had ceded power to Musk, Trump clarified, "No, no. That's not happening." He added, "He's not gonna be president," dismissing any notion of Musk taking over.

Panama Canal Concerns

Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation at the Panama Canal, stating that the U.S. was being "ripped off." The canal is crucial for Panama's economy, generating about 20% of its annual revenue. Recent droughts in Central America affected canal operations, leading to reduced ship crossings and increased fees for reserving slots.

With weather conditions normalising later in 2023, transit through the canal has stabilised. However, further price hikes are anticipated next year. Trump vowed that under his leadership, this "complete rip off" would end immediately. He even suggested that the canal could be returned to U.S. control without elaborating on how this would be achieved.

Influence of Turning Point USA

Trump's appearance at Turning Point USA's event underscored the organisation's growing influence within conservative circles. Founded by Charlie Kirk, Turning Point has mobilised thousands of field organisers across key battleground states. This effort helped Trump gain support among groups traditionally leaning Democratic, such as younger voters and Latino men.

"You had Turning Point's grassroots armies," Trump said during his speech. "It's not my victory; it's your victory." Earlier that day, he announced Stephen Miran as his choice to lead the Council of Economic Advisers. Miran previously worked at the Treasury Department during Trump's first term.

Support from Major Donors

Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt pledged $1.1 million to Trump's inaugural fund. This adds to the $14 million he already contributed to Make America Great Again Inc., making him one of Trump's top donors. Pratt is chairman of Pratt Industries, which uses recycled materials to produce new cardboard products.

The rally concluded with Trump emphasising unity and confidence within his party while criticising Democrats for losing their way after recent elections. He expressed hope that they would eventually join forces with Republicans for a stronger nation.
