Trump Slaps 50% Tariff On Brazil Over 'Witch Hunt' Trial Against Bolsonaro
President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% import tax on Brazil, citing the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as the reason.
Trump, who considers Bolsonaro a friend, linked tariffs to what he called a "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro."This Trial should not be taking place," Trump wrote in the letter posted on Truth Social. "It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!"

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva responded strongly, stating that Brazil would invoke its economic reciprocity law. This law allows Brazil to suspend trade and investment agreements with countries that harm its competitiveness. Lula emphasised Brazil's sovereignty and independence in his statement, according to a report in Associated Press.
Trump's Tariff Strategy
The tariffs are set to increase from 10% to 50% starting August 1. This decision follows Trump's earlier declaration of an economic emergency due to trade imbalances. However, the rationale is questionable since the U.S. exports more to Brazil than it imports. The U.S. had a $6.8 billion trade surplus with Brazil last year.
In addition to targeting Brazil, Trump sent letters to leaders of seven other nations, including the Philippines and Brunei. These countries will face varying tariff rates starting August 1. The tariffs range from 20% for the Philippines to 30% for Libya and Iraq.
Lula's Defence of Brazil's Legal System
Lula defended Brazil's judiciary, stating that proceedings against those involved in the alleged coup attempt are solely within its jurisdiction. He stressed that these legal actions are not subject to external interference or threats that could undermine national institutions' independence.
Bolsonaro has been barred from running for office until 2030 by Brazil's electoral authorities. He did not comment on Trump's tariff decision but claimed political persecution on social media.
Impact on Global Trade Relations
The European Union, another major trade partner, does not expect similar tariff letters from Trump despite his previous criticisms of their trade practices. Meanwhile, Japan and South Korea have already been hit with a 25% import tax as part of Trump's tariff strategy.
Trump's administration argues that these tariffs will reduce trade imbalances and bring back factory jobs to the U.S., despite most economic analyses suggesting otherwise. Critics argue that such measures could worsen inflationary pressures and hinder economic growth.
Political Implications
Brazilian lawmakers allied with Lula blamed Bolsonaro and his sons for Trump's actions, accusing them of harming Brazil's economy and jobs. Senator Lindbergh Farias criticised them on social media for their perceived role in this situation.
The tariffs have sparked concerns about potential retaliation from affected countries. Trump warned of additional tariffs if any country attempts to retaliate against his measures.
Despite these tensions, Trump claims that countries have not complained about the new rates outlined in his letters. He insists that he is keeping them at a conservative level compared to previous announcements.
