Trump Opts Out of ABC Debate, Suggests Fox News for Harris Showdown
Donald Trump has announced he will not participate in a scheduled debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC in September. Instead, he wants the debate to take place on Fox News, making it unlikely that the candidates will meet on stage before the November election.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump stated that his agreement to the September 10 debate on ABC "has been terminated." He cited the end of Joe Biden's campaign after a poor performance in their first debate as a reason. Trump now plans to appear on Fox News on September 4 in Pennsylvania, with rules similar to his previous debate with Biden but with a full audience.
Michael Tyler, a spokesperson for Harris, accused Trump of "running scared" and trying to back out of the agreed debate. Tyler added that Trump is seeking refuge with Fox News. It remains unclear if ABC will convert its September 10 event into a Harris town hall in Trump's absence.
Trump's Debate Strategy
Trump has been inconsistent about debating Harris since she entered the presidential race. He initially expressed an obligation to debate but later suggested in a Fox News interview that Americans "already know everything" about both candidates. Harris has urged Trump to honour his commitment, challenging him to "say it to my face."
In his Truth Social posts, Trump also mentioned his ongoing litigation against ABC News as a "conflict of interest" for participating in their debate. He sued the network in March after anchor George Stephanopoulos claimed Trump was found "liable for rape." A New York jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing columnist E. Jean Carroll but rejected her rape claim.
Harris's Commitment
Despite Trump's withdrawal, Harris remains committed to the September 10 time slot on ABC. Tyler confirmed that Harris would use the opportunity to address a prime-time national audience, regardless of Trump's participation.
Trump had previously agreed to the September 10 debate on ABC and a June 27 debate on CNN, which contributed to Biden's exit from the race. David Muir and Linsey Davis are set to moderate ABC's debate instead of Stephanopoulos.
Trump has skipped debates before, including all the 2024 Republican presidential primary debates. His decision to switch networks and dates adds another layer of complexity to the upcoming election season.
The evolving debate schedule highlights the strategic manoeuvring by both campaigns as they prepare for the November election. The outcome of these debates could significantly influence voter perceptions and decisions.
This latest development underscores the unpredictable nature of this election cycle. Both candidates are navigating a complex landscape filled with legal battles and media strategies.
The final weeks leading up to the election will be crucial as both sides attempt to sway undecided voters and solidify their bases. The debates, if they occur, will play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion.
The political landscape remains dynamic, with each candidate adapting their strategies in response to new challenges and opportunities. The coming months promise intense campaigning and critical moments that could determine the election's outcome.
As events unfold, voters will closely watch how each candidate handles these high-stakes situations. The debates, media appearances, and campaign strategies will all contribute to shaping the narrative leading up to Election Day.
The conclusion of this election cycle will hinge on how effectively each candidate can communicate their vision and address key issues facing the nation. The debates will be a significant platform for these discussions, providing voters with essential insights into each candidate's policies and leadership style.
