Trump Sends Letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Seeking New Deal on Nuclear Programme

US President Donald Trump has reached out to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, with a letter proposing a new agreement to curb Iran's nuclear programme. This comes after Trump withdrew the US from the previous deal during his first term. Iranian media quickly reported on Trump's comments from a Fox Business News interview, although Khamenei's office has not confirmed receipt of the letter.

The interview, which will air in full on Sunday, reveals Trump's desire for negotiations over military action. "I've written them a letter saying, I hope you're going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily, it's going to be a terrible thing," Trump stated. He mentioned sending the letter "yesterday," indicating Thursday as the day of dispatch.

Iran's Nuclear Ambitions

Both Israel and the US have expressed their determination to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. This stance raises concerns about potential military conflict as Iran continues enriching uranium close to weapons-grade levels. The White House confirmed Trump's outreach, emphasising his preference for negotiation over military intervention.

Trump's approach mirrors his previous attempts at diplomacy with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, which involved direct communication but did not result in any agreements limiting North Korea's nuclear capabilities. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful, though tensions remain high due to US sanctions and regional conflicts.

Economic and Political Pressures

Iran faces significant economic challenges, with its currency devalued and unemployment high. Social unrest persists, particularly among women defying hijab laws following Mahsa Amini's death two years ago. Meanwhile, Iran's relations with Israel are strained amid ongoing conflicts and assassinations of key figures by Israel.

Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran was restricted to enriching uranium up to 3.67% purity and maintaining a stockpile of 300 kilograms. However, recent reports indicate Iran's stockpile has surged to over 8,000 kilograms, with some enriched up to 60% purity. This escalation adds pressure on Trump as he balances sanctions with potential negotiations.

Diplomatic Challenges Ahead

Khamenei previously signalled openness to talks with the US but later described such negotiations as unwise following Trump's proposal for nuclear discussions. Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian supports Khamenei's stance while advocating for Western engagement.

The situation remains tense as Israel considers preemptive strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. Despite these threats, Trump maintains that diplomacy is preferable. However, Iran's UN mission reported no receipt of Trump's letter, leaving the future of US-Iran relations uncertain.

US intelligence suggests Iran has not yet initiated a weapons programme but is positioning itself to develop one if desired. The UN nuclear watchdog recently noted an acceleration in Iran's uranium enrichment activities. As Trump navigates these complexities, his administration continues its "maximum pressure" policy targeting Iran's oil sales.
