Trump Revokes Security Protection for Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Aide Brian Hook Amid Iran Threats
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his aide Brian Hook have lost their government security protection. This decision, made by President Donald Trump, comes amid threats from Iran due to their hardline positions during Trump's first term. A congressional staffer and another source confirmed the change, noting that both were informed on Wednesday, with the protection ending at 11 pm.

The revocation of security for Pompeo and Hook follows a similar action against John Bolton. Bolton, who was dismissed as Trump's national security adviser, had his security clearance and Secret Service protection removed. He expressed disappointment but was not surprised by this decision. Bolton has been a target for assassination by Iran.
Security Measures and Threats
The Biden administration had previously ensured continuous protection for Pompeo and Hook through the Diplomatic Security Service since January 2021. This protection was renewed systematically, with the last authorization in October 2021. The State Department reported spending over $2 million monthly on their security due to ongoing threats from Iran.
Pompeo and Hook were key figures in the U.S.'s "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran after Trump exited the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. Iran holds them responsible for the death of Qassem Soleimani, a commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in January 2020.
Reactions and Implications
A former senior Biden administration official criticized Trump's actions as "highly irresponsible," given the active threats against these former officials. The official noted that Trump administration members were briefed about these threats earlier this month.
Trump's recent actions also included firing Hook from his role at the Wilson Centre, a think tank. Meanwhile, Pompeo's representative did not respond to requests for comment, and Hook has not replied to messages since Bolton's security was revoked.
The New York Times initially reported on the withdrawal of protections for Pompeo and Hook. This move is seen as part of Trump's broader efforts to target perceived adversaries early in his return to office.
Additionally, Trump revoked security clearances for several former intelligence officials who had signed a letter in 2020 regarding Hunter Biden's laptop story as a "Russian information operation." Trump had previously expressed dissatisfaction with Pompeo, stating publicly that he would not be involved in his new administration.
This series of decisions highlights ongoing tensions between current and former government officials regarding national security measures and political allegiances. The situation underscores the complexities of managing security threats while navigating political dynamics.
