The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration said 1123 files have been released. Earlier, over 6 million pages of records, photographs, motion pictures, sound recordings and artifacts related to the assassination have previously been released.

"President Trump is ushering in a new era of maximum transparency. Today, per his direction, previously redacted JFK Assassination Files are being released to the public with no redactions. Promises made, promises kept," US Director of National Intelligence, DNI Tulsi Gabbard, said in a tweet.

Researchers estimate that around 3,000 files remain unreleased, either partially or in full. Additionally, the FBI recently uncovered approximately 2,400 new records related to the assassination. While experts believe the newly disclosed documents are unlikely to contain groundbreaking revelations, public interest remains high in the details surrounding the event.

In January, President Donald Trump directed the national intelligence director and attorney general to devise a plan for releasing the records.

Kennedy's Assassination

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, during a visit to Dallas. As his motorcade passed through downtown, gunfire erupted from the Texas School Book Depository. Police later arrested 24-year-old Lee Harvey Oswald, who had been positioned on the building's sixth floor. Two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald while he was being transferred between jails.

A year after the assassination, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Warren Commission to investigate the killing. The commission concluded that Oswald acted alone, with no evidence of a conspiracy. However, the report failed to silence decades of speculation and alternative theories.

Take a Poll

In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related records be stored in the National Archives and released by 2017, unless exempted by presidential order.

When Trump took office in 2017, he initially pledged to release all remaining files but withheld some, citing national security concerns. While President Joe Biden's administration has continued releasing documents, some remain classified. Historian Larry Sabato noted that his team has identified a "long, long list" of highly redacted documents they are eager to review. "If entire paragraphs or pages are still hidden, there must be something extremely sensitive," he said, adding that some redactions likely involve Cuba and the CIA's activities related to Oswald.
