Donald Trump, the President-elect, has expressed his desire to abolish daylight saving time. On Friday, he posted on social media that his party would work towards ending this practice once he assumes office. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation," he stated.

Trump Aims to End Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time involves adjusting clocks forward by an hour in spring and back in autumn. This practice aims to make the most of daylight during summer. However, it has faced criticism over the years. Initially introduced as a wartime measure in 1942, it has been debated by lawmakers who have occasionally suggested its complete removal.

Daylight Saving Time Debate

The Sunshine Protection Act was a notable recent effort to make daylight saving time permanent. This bipartisan bill, however, has stalled. Florida Senator Marco Rubio sponsored the measure and was chosen by Trump for the State Department role. "Changing the clock twice a year is outdated and unnecessary," remarked Republican Senator Rick Scott from Florida when the Senate supported the proposal.

Health experts argue that standard time should be permanent instead. Groups like the American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine advocate for eliminating time switches. They believe standard time aligns better with natural sunlight and human biology.

Global Observance of Daylight Saving

Most countries do not follow daylight saving time. For those that do, the dates for changing clocks differ, leading to complex variations in time differences globally. Notably, Arizona and Hawaii do not adjust their clocks at all.
