Trump Orders More US Troops To Middle East As Iran Ceasefire Nears April 22 Deadline

The United States is set to deploy thousands of additional troops to the Middle East in the coming days, even as signs emerge that negotiations between Washington and Tehran could resume this weekend. The move comes just ahead of the expiry of the current two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran on April 22, raising fresh questions over whether the fragile pause in hostilities will hold.

Fresh US troop deployment planned before ceasefire ends

According to a report by The Washington Post, around 6,000 troops aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and accompanying warships are expected to arrive in the region by the end of the month. They will be joined by nearly 4,200 Navy and Marine personnel travelling with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, along with its embarked Marine task force, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

These reinforcements are expected to add to the roughly 50,000 US personnel already involved in Pentagon operations aimed at countering Iran, even as diplomatic efforts remain in flux.

Trump says conflict could end "very soon"

Amid the military build-up, US President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that the war with Iran may not continue much longer if Tehran makes the right decisions.

Speaking to Fox Business during an interview on Mornings With Maria Bartiromo, Trump said, "I think it can be over very soon. If they're smart, it will end soon."

He also linked a possible end to the conflict with economic relief at home, saying gas prices will "go down tremendously" once the situation is resolved.

US naval blockade raises tensions with Tehran

The latest escalation follows Trump's announcement on Sunday of a naval blockade of Iranian ports after 21-hour high-level peace talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad collapsed without an agreement.

Iran has sharply criticised the blockade, warning that it could amount to the first sign of a ceasefire breakdown. In a statement broadcast by Iranian state television, the head of Iran's military central command centre said the US action risks undermining the truce.

The Iranian military said that if Washington continues the blockade, it will create "insecurity for Iran's commercial vessels and oil tankers", which will constitute "a prelude" to violating the ceasefire.

Ali Abdollahi issued an even stronger warning, saying, "The powerful armed forces of the Islamic republic will not allow any exports or imports to continue in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea."

Strait tensions grow as US tightens maritime pressure

Since the war began, Iran has continued moving its own oil and goods through the narrow waterway while significantly restricting maritime traffic from other countries, particularly those considered hostile by Tehran.

In response, the US military is reportedly preparing to track Iranian ships crossing the Strait and board them physically if required.

The US Central Command said the blockade is now fully in force and described it as a major economic blow to Tehran.

"An estimated 90 per cent of Iran's economy is fuelled by international trade by sea. In less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, US forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea."

With the ceasefire clock ticking and fresh troop movements under way, the coming days are likely to be crucial in determining whether the region heads back towards open conflict or returns to the negotiating table.
