Trump Proposes Charles Kushner for Ambassador Role in France Amid Controversy
Donald Trump, the President-elect, announced on Saturday his intention to appoint Charles Kushner as the ambassador to France. Charles Kushner is the father of Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law. Trump praised Charles Kushner in a Truth Social post, describing him as "a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker." Charles Kushner founded Kushner Companies, a real estate firm.

Jared Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, served as a senior adviser in the White House during Trump's presidency. In December 2020, Trump pardoned Charles Kushner. He had previously pleaded guilty to tax evasion and making illegal campaign contributions. This plea followed allegations of a revenge scheme against his brother-in-law.
Charles Kushner's Legal Troubles
Prosecutors claimed that Charles Kushner sought revenge on his brother-in-law for cooperating with federal authorities. He allegedly hired a prostitute to entrap his brother-in-law in a New Jersey motel room. The encounter was secretly recorded and sent to his sister, the man's wife. Charles Kushner eventually admitted guilt to 18 charges, including tax evasion and witness tampering.
In 2005, Charles Kushner received a two-year prison sentence as part of a plea agreement. This was the maximum sentence possible under the deal but less than what Chris Christie had pursued. Christie was the US attorney for New Jersey at the time and later became governor and a Republican presidential candidate.
Chris Christie's Criticism
Chris Christie has been vocal about his disdain for Charles Kushner's actions. He described them as "one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes" he prosecuted during his tenure as US attorney. Christie also blamed Jared Kushner for his dismissal from Trump's transition team in 2016.
The relationship between Trump and Charles Kushner dates back to their involvement in real estate circles. Their families became connected when Jared and Ivanka married in 2009. Despite past controversies, Trump has chosen to highlight Charles Kushner's business acumen in considering him for the ambassadorial role.
The announcement of Charles Kushner's potential appointment comes amid ongoing discussions about diplomatic positions under Trump's upcoming administration. While some may question this decision due to past legal issues, others may see it as a testament to Trump's loyalty to those close to him.
