Trump Appoints Massad Boulos as Senior Adviser for Middle Eastern Affairs Amid Arab American Engagement

Donald Trump, the President-elect, has appointed Massad Boulos as a senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. Boulos, a Lebanese American businessman and father-in-law to Trump's daughter Tiffany, played a crucial role in engaging the Arab American community during Trump's campaign in Michigan. His efforts were pivotal in areas with significant Arab American populations, who were dissatisfied with President Joe Biden's support for Israel's actions in Gaza and Lebanon.

Trump Names Massad Boulos Senior Adviser

Trump's victory in Michigan was partly due to winning Dearborn Heights, a city with a large Arab American population. "He has been a longtime proponent of Republican and Conservative values, an asset to my Campaign, and was instrumental in building tremendous new coalitions with the Arab American Community," Trump stated on Truth Social. Despite promises of peace in the Middle East from both Trump and Boulos, specific plans remain undisclosed.

Trump's Key Appointments

Boulos has political connections in Lebanon and has previously sought office there. Other key appointments by Trump include individuals with strong support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mike Huckabee, chosen as ambassador to Israel, opposes a Palestinian state and questions the existence of Palestinians as a distinct group. Pete Hegseth, nominated for defence secretary, supports rebuilding a Jewish temple on the Al-Aqsa Mosque site.

Boulos capitalised on divisions within the Democratic base over support for Israel's offensive in Gaza. Health officials report over 44,000 deaths since Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. These figures do not distinguish between civilians and fighters. Trump's campaign leveraged these tensions to gain support among Arab Americans.

Impact of Boulos' Efforts

In 2016, Trump won Michigan by just over 10,000 votes but lost it to Biden in 2020 by approximately 154,000 votes. However, he reclaimed Michigan in November against Vice President Kamala Harris with 49.7% of the vote. Trump's reliance on family members and their relatives for key positions continues into his second administration. Recently, he announced plans to nominate Charles Kushner as ambassador to France.

"Massad is a dealmaker, and an unwavering supporter of PEACE in the Middle East," Trump reiterated on Truth Social. This appointment reflects Trump's ongoing strategy of involving family connections in significant roles within his administration.

Trump's approach to foreign policy appointments highlights his alignment with Israeli interests through his choices for national security positions. These selections indicate a continuation of policies favouring Israel under his leadership. The implications of these appointments will unfold as Trump assumes office once again.
