Trump Signals Potential Military Action for Control of Greenland and Panama Canal

Donald Trump, the President-elect, has indicated he might consider using military force to gain control over the Panama Canal and Greenland. He emphasised the importance of these territories for US national security. Speaking to reporters, Trump did not dismiss the possibility of military intervention, stating, "It might be that you'll have to do something. The Panama Canal is vital to our country."

Trump May Use Military for Greenland, Canal

Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark and home to a significant US military base, was also mentioned by Trump. He questioned Denmark's claim over Greenland, despite Denmark being a long-standing US ally and NATO member. Trump's stance marks a shift from previous US policies that favoured self-determination over territorial expansion.

Denmark's Response to Trump's Remarks

In response to Trump's comments, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed confidence in the US-Denmark relationship. She stated that she did not believe the US would use military or economic power to take control of Greenland. Frederiksen welcomed increased US interest in the Arctic but stressed it should respect Greenland's people and allow continued cooperation between Denmark and the US within NATO.

The Panama Canal has been under Panama's control for over 25 years. The US handed back control of the canal zone in 1979 and ended its joint management in 1999. Trump's remarks suggest a potential reversal of this longstanding arrangement.

Trump's Visit to Greenland

Trump shared a video of his private plane landing in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, highlighting the snowy landscape. He wrote, "Don Jr and my Reps landing in Greenland," adding that the reception was positive. However, Greenland's government clarified that Donald Trump Jr.'s visit was private and not official, with no meetings planned with Greenlandic representatives.

Additionally, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," describing it as having a "beautiful ring." He also suggested Canada could join the United States but ruled out military force for this idea, preferring economic means instead.

Biden's Actions and Trump's Response

Trump criticised President Joe Biden for hindering his transition by banning offshore energy drilling in most federal waters. Biden used his authority to protect about 625 million acres from future oil and gas leasing. Trump vowed to reverse this decision on his first day in office and take legal action if necessary.

Despite Trump's complaints about the transition process, Biden's team has extended courtesies to Trump's incoming administration. Susie Wiles, Trump's incoming chief of staff, acknowledged Biden's chief of staff Jeff Zients as "very helpful" during this period.

In further comments, Trump criticised special counsel Jack Smith's investigations related to the January 6 Capitol insurrection and classified documents found after he left office in 2021. These cases were dropped following Trump's election victory in November. The Justice Department is expected to release a report summarising Smith's investigation soon.

As Trump prepares for his presidency, his statements on territorial control and energy policies highlight potential shifts in US policy direction. His remarks have sparked reactions from international allies and domestic critics alike.
