Trump and Macron Host Zelenskyy in Paris Amid Global Challenges and Notre Dame Reopening

French President Emmanuel Macron extended a warm welcome to Donald Trump in Paris on Saturday. The meeting, which included Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was arranged quickly before the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. Macron greeted Trump with full presidential honours at the Elysee Palace, highlighting the importance of their meeting amidst global challenges. "It's a great honour for French people to welcome you five years later," Macron stated. "Welcome back again."

Trump and Macron Meet Zelenskyy in Paris

Trump expressed his appreciation for the reception, acknowledging the current global situation. "It certainly seems like the world is going a little crazy right now. And we'll be talking about that," he remarked. The red carpet treatment and military honours underscored France's recognition of Trump's influence, even before his official return to office in January 2025.

Diplomatic Engagements and Global Issues

Macron and other European leaders are keen to ensure continued support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion. Discussions also covered conflicts in the Middle East. Despite President Joe Biden declining an invitation to the Notre Dame ceremony due to scheduling conflicts, First Lady Jill Biden represented the US officially.

The meeting between Trump, Macron, and Zelenskyy lasted about 35 minutes. It was proposed by Macron and arranged shortly before Trump's arrival. Although Trump has promised a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict, details remain unclear, causing concern in Kyiv about potential negotiation terms.

Macron's efforts to project strong ties with Trump were evident as they met at the French president's official residence. A video posted later showed Macron asking Trump if he remembered their previous interactions, to which Trump replied affirmatively.

Strategic Discussions and Future Plans

Trump's visit included a small team of advisers such as Susie Wiles, Steve Witkoff, and Massad Boulos. However, no Ukraine experts were present. "United States, Ukraine and France. Together on this historic day. United for Notre-Dame," Macron wrote on X after their meeting.

Trump's election victory has raised questions about future US support for Ukraine. He has described Zelenskyy as "the greatest salesman on Earth" for securing substantial US aid and has suggested he could broker peace between Russia and Ukraine swiftly upon taking office.

Zelenskyy's aide Andriy Yermak recently met with Trump's team in the US to build trust with the incoming administration. Macron has argued that a defeat or unfavourable cease-fire for Ukraine would be seen as a loss for both the US and Trump himself.

At Notre Dame, Trump was seated prominently between Macron and his wife Brigitte, ahead of Jill Biden and other leaders. He also greeted Zelenskyy and Britain's Prince William, whom he planned to meet later at the British Embassy.

Historic Reopening of Notre Dame

Elon Musk attended the Notre Dame event alongside Trump. Macron has worked to maintain a positive relationship with Trump since his victory over Kamala Harris but downplayed the significance of Trump's invitation, noting that other non-office-holding politicians were also invited.

Trump appreciated Macron's efforts in restoring Notre Dame after its 2019 fire nearly destroyed it. "A wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory," Trump commented upon accepting Macron's invitation.

During Trump's first term, relations between France and the US began positively but became strained over time due to disagreements over NATO and trade issues. Despite past tensions, Macron was among the first leaders to congratulate Trump after his recent election win.

The historic reopening of Notre Dame marked a significant moment for France and its allies. The cathedral's restoration symbolises resilience and unity amidst global challenges faced by leaders like Macron and Trump today.
