Trump Extends Inauguration Invitation to Xi Jinping Despite Tariff Threats

Donald Trump, the incoming US President, has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his inauguration next month. This gesture comes amid Trump's threats to impose heavy tariffs on Chinese products. Karoline Leavitt, Trump's future press secretary, confirmed the invitation but noted that Xi's attendance remains uncertain. "This is an example of President Trump creating an open dialogue with leaders of countries that are not just our allies, but our adversaries and our competitors too," Leavitt stated on Fox News.

Invitation to Foreign Leaders

Trump's approach to foreign policy resembles business negotiations, using incentives and penalties to align adversaries with US interests. Inviting a leader from a rival nation to the inauguration is unusual but aligns with this strategy. Jim Bendat, a historian, mentioned he was unaware of any previous US inaugurations attended by foreign heads of state. "It's not necessarily a bad thing to invite foreign leaders to attend," Bendat commented.

The invitation coincides with Trump's plan to impose significant tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. He aims to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US. Trump has pledged to implement 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office, with potentially higher tariffs for China.

International Reactions

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has criticised Trump's tariff threats, warning they could harm the US economy. Trudeau stated that Americans are realising the potential cost implications of tariffs on Canadian goods and promised retaliation if Trump proceeds. Meanwhile, China's Xi urged the US not to initiate a trade war during a recent meeting with President Joe Biden in Beijing.

US-China relations face additional challenges beyond tariffs. The Biden administration accuses China of indirectly supporting Russia's war in Ukraine by increasing sales of dual-use components that bolster Russia's military industry. Furthermore, US officials are frustrated with China's lack of action in curbing North Korea's support for Russia.

North Korea has sent troops and munitions to Russia, according to intelligence from the US and South Korea. These actions have further strained relations between the US and China, as North Korea relies heavily on trade with China.

Upcoming Inauguration

Trump's inauguration is scheduled for January 20th, coinciding with a deadline for ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to sell the app or face a ban in the US. This adds another layer of complexity to US-China relations during this transition period.

In addition to Xi, other foreign leaders have been invited to the inauguration, though specific details remain undisclosed. A top aide to Hungarian President Viktor Orban confirmed that Orban does not plan to attend at this time. Orban, a strong supporter of Trump internationally, has faced isolation in Europe due to his stance on Ukraine.

Trump recently discussed his inauguration plans at the New York Stock Exchange without naming specific invitees. He acknowledged some might view inviting certain individuals as risky but expressed willingness to take calculated risks.

The diplomatic outreach reflects Trump's broader strategy of engaging both allies and adversaries in dialogue. As tensions persist over trade and geopolitical issues, these interactions will be closely watched by international observers.
