Trump Govt Sanctions 2 Russian Oil Companies After Failed Talks With Putin

The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed new sanctions on Russia's oil industry. This move comes after President Donald Trump called off a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was intended to address Russia's conflict with Ukraine.

"Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire," stated Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The sanctions target Rosneft and Lukoil, two major Russian oil companies.

He said, "Given President Putin's refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia's two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin's war machine. Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump's effort to end yet another war. We encourage our allies to join us in and adhere to these sanctions."

Despite the ongoing war and economic challenges, Rosneft and Lukoil remain significant players on the Moscow Stock Exchange, each valued at over $50 billion. The sanctions aim to cut off funding for the Kremlin's military activities.

Sanctions Aim to Pressure Russia

President Trump expressed his belief that it was the right moment to implement these sanctions. "I just felt it was time. Waited a long time," he remarked, highlighting their significance against Russia's major oil firms. Trump hopes these measures will not need to last long and that a resolution to the war can be reached soon.

Trump also urged both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to act reasonably and put aside their differences for peace. Meanwhile, Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S., Olga Stefanishyna, voiced her strong support for the sanctions, stating they align with Ukraine's stance of achieving peace through strength and international pressure.

Diplomatic Efforts Face Challenges

Last week, there seemed to be a thaw in U.S.-Russia relations following a call between Trump and Putin. However, tensions resurfaced when Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov resisted calls for an immediate ceasefire before negotiations, a demand supported by Kyiv and Europe.

Trump explained his decision to cancel the meeting with Putin: "It just didn't feel right... we'll do it in the future." He noted that despite having good conversations with Putin, progress remains elusive. Trump's administration faces pressure from Zelenskyy, European allies, and bipartisan members of Congress to increase sanctions on Russia.
