Trump Stages Comeback with Outdoor Rally in North Carolina After Assassination Bid
Donald Trump held his first outdoor rally since last month's assassination attempt in North Carolina, focusing on national security. The event is part of his weeklong tour to divert attention from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

"Seventy-six days from now, we're going to win this state and we're going to win the White House," Trump declared at the North Carolina Aviation Museum & Hall of Fame. He spoke from behind bulletproof glass, with storage containers and snipers providing additional security.
Focus on National Security
The rally was framed around national security issues. Allies have been advising Trump to concentrate on policy rather than personal attacks as he faces Vice President Kamala Harris in the race. This shift comes after President Joe Biden exited the contest.
On Tuesday night, the Democratic convention featured strong critiques from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. They repeatedly called out Trump by name, with Michelle Obama saying, "His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black."
Barack Obama also criticised Trump's obsession with crowd sizes and labelled him "a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn't stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago." He added that Trump's grievances have worsened due to his fear of losing to Harris.
Running Mate's Criticism
Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, joined him on Wednesday. Vance criticised Harris as a candidate chosen by power brokers rather than voters. He also attacked her vice presidential pick, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, for allegedly misrepresenting his military service record.
"What won't Stolen Valor Tim Walz lie about?" Vance asked the crowd, referencing Walz's retirement before his unit's deployment to Iraq. Vance served four years as a Marine.
Trump has been actively campaigning in battleground states this week. His visit to North Carolina marks his second trip to the state in just a week. Last Wednesday, he spoke about the economy in Asheville.
North Carolina's Importance
North Carolina is crucial for this year's election. Trump won the state comfortably in 2016 and had a narrow victory margin four years ago. It remains a key battleground for 2024.
Before Trump's arrival at the rally site, his plane performed a flyover, eliciting cheers from the crowd. Edna Ryan, a 68-year-old retired flight attendant and private pilot, expressed optimism about the Republicans' chances but stressed the need for strength.
Lisa Watts, a retired business owner from Hickory, North Carolina, attended her fifth Trump rally and felt "very positive" about the race against Harris. "A month ago they never spoke her name and now she's like, quote quote the saviour for the country," Watts said.
Watts doubted Harris's readiness to run the country based on her record and believed that Trump's chances of winning haven't changed much since Biden was the nominee. She predicted that the hype around Harris would eventually fade.
The rally highlighted Trump's efforts to regain momentum as he campaigns against Harris. With national security as a focal point, Trump aims to draw attention away from Democrats and their convention activities.
