Trump Vows to End Russia-Ukraine Conflict in One Day; Russia Disagrees

Donald Trump has frequently asserted that he could resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine within a day if re-elected. However, Russia's United Nations ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, disagrees. When asked about Trump's claim, Nebenzia stated that the Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved in a single day.

Trumps Day-End War Claim Disputed

At a CNN town hall in May 2023, Trump expressed his desire to stop the casualties on both sides. "They're dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I'll have that done — I'll have that done in 24 hours," he said. He mentioned that this would be achieved after meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine's Territorial Integrity

Last month, nearly 80 countries convened in Switzerland to advocate for Ukraine's territorial integrity as the foundation for any peace agreement. However, some significant developing nations did not participate, and Russia was absent from the conference.

Nebenzia highlighted Putin's offer on June 14 to "immediately" initiate a cease-fire and start negotiations if Kyiv withdraws troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and abandons plans to join NATO. Zelenskyy rejected this proposal, labelling it an ultimatum to surrender more land.

Western Influence and Peace Efforts

Nebenzia claimed that the war could have ended in April 2022 when Russia and Ukraine were close to an agreement in Istanbul. He blamed Ukraine's Western allies for obstructing the peace deal and encouraging Kyiv to continue fighting. He also criticised Zelenskyy's peace plan, calling it "a joke."

After Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Ukrainian forces managed to halt their advance towards the capital. The conflict has since concentrated in Ukraine's south and east, where Russia has illegally annexed four regions but does not fully control any of them.

Challenges on the Ground

Ukraine has faced difficulties stabilising its front lines due to delayed military aid from the United States, which was only approved in April. This delay allowed Russia to launch an offensive and make gains. Nebenzia described Zelenskyy's peace formula as "a nonstarter" and urged him to be realistic about the situation since April.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to an email seeking comments on Nebenzia's remarks. During a recent debate with President Joe Biden, Trump claimed that if there were a president respected by Putin, he would never have invaded Ukraine.

Nebenzia warned that as the situation on the ground becomes more challenging for Ukraine, diplomatic efforts to end the war will also become more difficult.

The ongoing conflict has seen significant casualties and destruction, with both sides suffering losses. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution based on Ukraine's territorial integrity.
