Trump Campaign Seeks Military Aircraft and Armoured Vehicles Due to Rising Threats from Iran

Donald Trump's campaign team has requested enhanced security measures, including military aircraft capable of intercepting missiles, due to increasing threats from Iran. This request comes amid a campaign already affected by violence. Iran has allegedly targeted Trump and other former officials, and is blamed for hacking campaign officials. Trump narrowly escaped one assassination attempt, with another thwarted by the U.S. Secret Service, though neither is publicly linked to Iran.

Trump Requests Military Support Amid Iran Threats

The campaign's requests include military planes, special armoured vehicles, expanded flight restrictions over rallies and homes, decoy aircraft reimbursements, and more funding for the Secret Service and local law enforcement. Trump and his team argue that limited resources hinder his campaigning. The Secret Service insists Trump receives "the highest levels of protection." President Joe Biden expressed willingness to approve military aircraft use for Trump if it aligns with protocols.

Security Measures and Requests

The New York Times first reported these new security requests. A letter from senior Trump adviser Susie Wiles to acting Secret Service director Ronald Rowe Jr. outlined the campaign's needs. It asked for pre-positioned ballistic glass at outdoor rallies in key states, as current arrangements require over a week's notice. This notice is seen as impractical given the fast-paced nature of campaigns.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated that since an attempted assassination on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the agency has enhanced its operations. Trump receives top-level protection, including assistance from the Department of Defense with canine units and restricted air traffic during his travels. Former presidents can use military airlift upon request by the current president.

Campaign Accusations and Security Concerns

For weeks, Trump's campaign has accused the Secret Service of limiting events due to resource constraints. A speech in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin was scaled back because of these limitations. Trump claims Biden is withholding resources to aid Vice President Kamala Harris by preventing him from addressing large crowds. Despite this, Trump praises his security detail for their bravery.

Wiles has also discussed her concerns with White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients about threats affecting Trump's campaign ability. Zients connected her with Homeland Security and Secret Service leadership after Biden directed them to provide maximum protection for Trump.

Iranian Threats and Campaign Response

Iran reportedly seeks retaliation against Trump for the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani. In August, a Pakistani man linked to Iran was charged in a plot targeting U.S. political figures, with legal filings suggesting Trump was a potential target. Iranian hackers have been charged with stealing information from Trump's campaign and attempting to share it with news outlets.

Trump's campaign criticises the Biden administration for downplaying death threats while focusing on email hacks. Senior adviser Chris LaCivita noted former President Clinton's missile response to an Iraqi assassination plot against George H.W. Bush as a contrast to current actions.

National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett stated that the administration closely monitors Iranian threats against Trump and former officials as a high-priority security matter. He warned that any attack by Iran would result in severe consequences.
