Trump Campaign Reports Email Hack, Points to Possible Iranian Role

Former President Donald Trump's presidential campaign announced on Saturday that it had been hacked, suggesting Iranian actors were involved in the theft and distribution of sensitive internal documents. The campaign did not provide specific evidence linking Iran to the hack. This claim follows a Microsoft report detailing foreign interference attempts in the 2024 US election.

Trump Campaign Email Hack

Microsoft's report, released on Friday, highlighted an incident involving an Iranian military intelligence unit. In June, this unit allegedly sent a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a US presidential campaign using a compromised email account of a former senior advisor. The report noted that foreign influence operations concerning the 2024 US election have increased over the past six months, initially driven by Russian activities but more recently by Iranian efforts.

Foreign Interference in US Elections

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung attributed the hack to "foreign sources hostile to the United States." He referenced Microsoft's findings, which indicated that "Iranian hackers broke into the account of a high-ranking official on the US presidential campaign in June 2024." Cheung warned that media outlets reprinting these documents would be aiding America's enemies.

Politico first reported on the hack on Saturday, revealing that it began receiving emails from an anonymous AOL account identified only as "Robert" on July 22. The emails contained what appeared to be a research dossier on Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who was later selected as Trump's running mate. The document was dated February 23, nearly five months before Vance's selection.

Microsoft's Findings and Iranian Denial

In response to Microsoft's report, Iran's United Nations mission denied any plans to interfere or launch cyberattacks in the US presidential election. The report detailed that Iranian cyber-enabled influence operations have been a consistent feature of at least the last three US election cycles. These operations typically appear later in the election season and focus more on disrupting election conduct than swaying voters.

The National Security Council did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press on Saturday. Similarly, Microsoft's representatives did not respond to inquiries about their interactions with Trump's campaign regarding the matter.

The phishing email mentioned in Microsoft's report contained a fake forward with a hyperlink directing traffic through an actor-controlled domain before redirecting to the listed domain. This tactic is part of Iran's broader strategy to interfere with US elections.

Impact on Democratic Campaigns

Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the reported hacking or their cybersecurity protocols. The ongoing cyber threats underscore the need for robust security measures across all campaigns.

"These documents were obtained illegally" and "intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process," Cheung stated. He emphasized that any media outlet reprinting these documents would be doing exactly what America's enemies want.

Microsoft concluded that recent activities suggest both Iran and Russia may be equally engaged in influencing the 2024 election. This conclusion highlights the persistent threat posed by foreign actors seeking to disrupt US democratic processes.

The Trump campaign's allegations and Microsoft's findings underscore the ongoing challenges of securing electoral processes against foreign interference. As election day approaches, vigilance and enhanced cybersecurity measures remain crucial for all involved parties.
