Trump Calls Netanyahu to Scale Back Lebanon Strikes Amid Fragile Iran Talks

Amid mounting fears of a wider Middle East conflict, the United States has quietly stepped in to cool tempers between Israel and its regional adversaries.

During a phone call on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scale back military operations in Lebanon. The message, reported by NBC News, reflects Washington's growing concern that an expanded conflict could derail sensitive diplomatic engagement with Iran.

Israel's response, according to officials, was measured but cautious-signalling willingness to cooperate without formally linking Lebanon to any existing ceasefire arrangements.

War Rhetoric vs Diplomatic Signals

The US intervention came just hours after Netanyahu struck a defiant note publicly, vowing to continue attacks on Lebanon with full force. The statement amplified regional anxieties, particularly as Iran warned of retaliation and hinted at abandoning ceasefire understandings altogether.

Yet, even as military rhetoric escalates, a parallel diplomatic thread appears to be emerging.

Netanyahu disclosed that Lebanon has been pushing for direct engagement, and Israel is now preparing to enter talks. The proposed dialogue would centre on dismantling the influence of Hezbollah and exploring the possibility of more stable ties between the two countries.

On the other side, anger is mounting in Beirut. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced plans to approach the United Nations after a fresh wave of Israeli strikes reportedly killed over 200 people.

Calling the attacks a serious breach of international and humanitarian law, Salam warned that such actions risk collapsing ongoing efforts to halt the conflict.

At the same time, Lebanon has begun tightening internal security, with authorities moving to consolidate control in Beirut and limit the possession of arms to state forces.
