Elon Musk Calls for Public Input in Trump's Treasury Department Selection Process
Elon Musk, a billionaire and key ally of President-elect Donald Trump, is advocating for public input in selecting the Treasury Department head. Musk suggested this on X, the social media platform he owns. He proposed a poll and endorsed Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, over hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. Musk stated, "Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas @howardlutnick will actually enact change."

Trump has been busy filling his Cabinet positions, with some selections already announced. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is chosen for Secretary of State and former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz for Attorney General. However, crucial roles like the heads of the Education and Labor Departments remain open. Many candidates are vying for these positions to gain Trump's favour.
Trump's Social Engagements and Political Connections
This weekend, Trump was at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, where he met with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson. Later, Trump planned to attend the UFC heavyweight championship fight at Madison Square Garden in New York. Trump's connection with UFC President Dana White spans over two decades, with White hosting a 2001 UFC event at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.
Trump's affinity for UFC events is well-known; he often attends fights with notable figures like Dana White, Kid Rock, and Tucker Carlson. During his first term in 2018, Trump appeared in a UFC video titled "Combatant In Chief." His relationship with White has strengthened as Trump's influence in the Republican Party has grown.
Political Dynamics and Public Perception
Howard Lutnick and Scott Bessent are both considered for the Treasury role during Trump's second term. While Bessent is seen as a conventional choice sceptical of cryptocurrency, Lutnick has suggested using it for tax payments. This difference highlights their distinct approaches to financial policy.
Musk's call for public involvement comes amid intense lobbying for key positions within Trump's administration. The president-elect's choices reflect his priorities as he prepares to take office on January 20. Meanwhile, Trump's presence at events like UFC fights underscores his enduring ties to New York and his long-standing relationships with influential figures.
Dana White's political profile has risen alongside Trump's prominence in the Republican Party. White spoke at the 2016 and 2020 Republican conventions and addressed Trump's Florida victory party after Election Day. He remarked on Trump's resilience: "This is what happens when the machine comes after you... He keeps going forward."
As Trump continues to shape his administration, public interest remains high regarding his Cabinet selections and political engagements. The dynamics within his team will likely influence policy directions in the coming years.
