Trump's Border Security Initiatives Face Legal and Logistical Challenges Amid New Strategies
President Donald Trump has initiated a series of measures to enhance security at the US southern border, fulfilling his campaign promise to tighten immigration controls. These actions include reviving past policies like requiring asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico and completing the border wall. New strategies involve ending automatic citizenship for those born in the US and involving the military in border security. These initiatives are expected to face legal and logistical challenges.

Impact on Immigration Policies
The CBP One app, used by migrants to secure appointments for entry into the US, was discontinued shortly after Trump's inauguration. This app had been a key component of President Joe Biden's immigration strategy, facilitating orderly entry while curbing illegal crossings. Critics argued it attracted more migrants, while supporters believed it brought order to the border. By midday, the app was no longer operational, leaving many migrants, like Melanie Mendoza from Venezuela, uncertain about their next steps.
Mexico's Role in Border Security
The Trump administration plans to reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy, requiring asylum-seekers to stay in Mexico while awaiting US court hearings. Mexico has agreed to this arrangement but emphasised the need for an online system for scheduling border appointments. Immigration advocates argue this policy endangers migrants in northern Mexico, where they are vulnerable to cartels. Krish O'Mara Vignarajah of Global Refuge expressed concerns about the policy's impact on migrants' safety and its failure to address migration's root causes.
Birthright Citizenship and Deportation Plans
Trump aims to challenge the constitutional right to birthright citizenship, a move likely to face significant legal hurdles. The 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the US, including children of undocumented immigrants or those on temporary visas. Details on how Trump plans to implement this change remain unclear. Additionally, Trump's administration intends to expand deportations beyond Biden's focus on individuals with criminal records or national security threats.
Erlinda, a single mother from El Salvador who arrived in 2013, is concerned about potential deportation and has arranged for her US-born children’s guardianship with Nora Sanidgo. Sanidgo has volunteered as a guardian for over 2,000 children in 15 years. Erlinda fears her children will experience prolonged separation from her due to these policies.
Military Involvement and Border Wall Construction
Trump plans to complete the border wall with assistance from the Department of Defense. The wall currently covers about one-third of the border, with many uncovered areas in Texas where crossings are rare due to difficult terrain. The number of troops and their roles at the border have not been specified. Historically, troops have supported Border Patrol agents without direct contact with migrants.
Designation of Criminal Cartels
The administration intends to classify criminal cartels as foreign terrorist organisations, focusing on groups like Venezuela's Tren de Aragua gang. This gang has become notorious for crimes such as kidnappings and extortion across the Western Hemisphere amid a mass exodus of Venezuelan migrants.
Refugee Resettlement Suspension
Trump plans to pause refugee resettlement for four months. Previously, he suspended and then reduced refugee admissions during his first term. Under Biden, refugee resettlement numbers increased significantly last year. The suspension aligns with Trump's broader immigration agenda.
The administration also seeks to end "catch-and-release," where migrants are released in the US while awaiting court hearings. However, funding for detention remains unspecified. Plans regarding asylum seekers from countries unwilling to repatriate their citizens are unclear.
